About the Role

Assist with characterising how receptors bind to hormone targets using label-free biophysical instruments. Focus on ligand kinetics screening to select and refine receptors for real-time, continuous biosensors. Requires careful experimental technique and attention to detail due to challenging small molecule targets.

Responsibilities

  • Run binding experiments on receptor-hormone interactions using GCI, SPR and ITC, following established methods.
  • Prepare samples, buffers and sensor chips, and maintain instruments to keep data quality consistent.
  • Measure binding kinetics (on-rates and off-rates) and affinity, and spot and flag common data artefacts.
  • Troubleshoot routine issues such as non-specific binding and carry-over, working with the team to optimise buffers, additives and cleaning protocols.
  • Support method refinement for difficult, poorly soluble targets.
  • Run assays in realistic biological samples to help assess how other components affect results.
  • Document methods and results clearly, and share findings with the wider team.

Requirements

  • 1-2 years of hands-on experience running biophysical characterisation instruments (SPR, GCI, ITC or BLI).
  • Experience with protein or small-molecule binding studies and basic kinetic analysis.
  • Awareness of common pitfalls in small-molecule binding, such as mass transport effects and solvent correction.
  • Strong attention to detail, careful record-keeping and a methodical approach to troubleshooting.
  • Experience with aptamers or other nucleic acid-small molecule interactions, hydrophobic targets, complex sample matrices, or ITC is a bonus.
  • Ability to live and breathe integrity, tackling challenges with honesty and transparency.
  • Ability to be a self-starter who loves diving into the unknown, collaborating on complex problems, and taking full ownership of results.
  • Ability to excel at open, clear communication and see every piece of feedback as a springboard for growth.
  • Motivation by creating real impact, particularly when it comes to advancing human health.
  • Ability to strike a balance between independence and collaboration.
  • Ability to be confident in defending your ideas, while also valuing respectful, constructive debate.
  • Ability to thrive in the dynamic atmosphere of a startup, constantly evolving your skill set and fearlessly applying what you learn.
