About the Role

As the Head of Merchant Pricing and Commercial Risk, you will lead the business through merchant pricing, risk settings for the merchant business, and manage relationships with schemes to ensure the right risk and reward trade-offs are set. Transaction banking is core to ANZ's strategy and will be critical to future success, with a compelling merchant payments proposition key to becoming the transactional bank of choice.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the merchant pricing strategy and governance framework, balancing customer value, competitive positioning, profitability, and risk-adjusted returns.
  • Oversee pricing models, commercial decisioning, profitability analysis, and margin management, maintaining strong pricing disciplines, controls, and approval governance.
  • Manage merchant pricing remediation and commercial risk by identifying issues, implementing sustainable controls, and ensuring effective governance and customer impact management.
  • Define and oversee merchant risk settings across the customer lifecycle, including pre-payment exposure, underwriting, transaction monitoring, fraud, chargebacks, settlement risk, and portfolio risk trends.
  • Maintain scheme compliance and manage relationships with payment schemes and key stakeholders, ensuring regulatory obligations, commercial outcomes, and risk requirements are effectively managed.
  • Manage a high-performing team and partner with Product, Risk, Finance, Legal, Compliance, Operations, and Distribution teams to optimize pricing performance, manage risk exposure, drive continuous improvement, and support strategic business outcomes.

Requirements

  • Deep experience in merchant acquiring, payments, transaction banking or financial services, with a strong understanding of payment acceptance, settlement, scheme economics and merchant portfolio dynamics.
  • Proven pricing strategy and commercial management experience, including pricing governance, customer profitability analysis, margin management, deal approval processes and executive-level commercial decision support.
  • Strong financial and analytical capability, including revenue, cost and scenario modelling, interpretation of portfolio performance, and translation of complex analysis into clear commercial recommendations.
  • Demonstrated risk management experience across merchant onboarding, underwriting, exposure monitoring, reserves, chargebacks, fraud, settlement risk and high-risk merchant segments.
  • Experience establishing or operating governance frameworks, controls, escalation pathways and remediation approaches for pricing, customer impact, operational or risk issues.
  • Strong stakeholder leadership skills, with the ability to influence senior leaders and work effectively across Product, Risk, Finance, Legal, Compliance, Operations, Technology and Distribution teams.
  • Clear understanding of regulatory, conduct and customer fairness expectations relevant to pricing, merchant services, payments and remediation activity.
