About the Role
Lead assigned civil projects or major scopes with multiple operations, emphasizing mass grading and large-scale site development for the Texas Civil Group. Projects may support utility-scale solar, wind energy, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and substations. This role directs Superintendent I personnel, foremen, and craft employees, coordinating subcontractor interfaces, resources, safety, quality, and production. Strong transferable civil leadership is the foundation; direct energy-sector experience is preferred.
Responsibilities
- Lead Granite’s safety program across assigned operations, verifying pre-task planning, coaching field leaders, stopping unsafe work, and confirming corrective actions.
- Coordinate compliance with project environmental requirements, including stormwater pollution prevention, erosion and sediment controls, dust suppression, and spill prevention.
- Lead clearing, earthwork, mass and finish grading, roads, drainage, stabilization, and related site work to meet approved plans, specifications, budgets, and schedules.
- Develop execution and look-ahead plans with project management, sequencing work areas, balancing cut and fill, planning haul routes, and coordinating handoffs.
- Direct and develop Superintendent I personnel and foremen, forecasting staffing, supporting hiring, and addressing performance and training needs.
- Balance crews, equipment fleets, materials, and subcontractor support across operations, coordinating mobilization, maintenance, utilization, and demobilization.
- Ensure accurate quantity and resource reporting, reviewing unit production, labor and equipment costs, and rework with project management. Provide field input to cost-to-complete forecasts and lead corrective or recovery plans.
- Coordinate survey and grade-control support, verifying use of current approved plans and machine-control files, and resolving discrepancies.
- Coordinate inspection and testing plans, grading tolerances, drainage, moisture and compaction requirements, and acceptance checks; resolve deficiencies and plan phased turnover.
- Represent assigned field operations in coordination meetings, resolving access and sequencing conflicts with subcontractors, suppliers, client representatives, and other trades.
- Identify differing conditions, scope changes, and schedule risks; ensure timely daily reports, photos, and project-team notification. Coordinate commitments and support requests for information and change orders.
- Lead punch-list completion, site restoration, and field closeout; capture lessons learned, standardize effective practices, and develop field leaders.
Requirements
- 8+ years in construction management and/or craft supervision experience in heavy civil construction, earthwork, mass grading, or comparable site development.
- Demonstrated leadership of multiple crews or concurrent civil operations, including direction of foremen or superintendents and coordination of staffing, equipment, quality, production, and schedule priorities.
- Experience evaluating field productive and cost performance, resolving construction constraints, and implementing coordinated corrective or recovery plans.
- Familiarity with Trimble, Topcon, or comparable GPS/GNSS machine-control systems.
- Ability to interpret civil plans, specifications, survey information, and work plans.
- Ability to develop integrated field plans, balance resources across work areas, understand schedule dependencies, and lead recovery planning.
- Ability to evaluate quantities, unit production and costs, equipment utilization, and remaining work.
- Practical knowledge of survey and GPS/GNSS grade-control workflows.
- Strong leadership, coaching, communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency with digital field reporting and document review.
- Team player.
- Comply, understand, and support corporate safety initiatives.
