About the Role
Longshot Systems is seeking an Engineering Manager to oversee the people and process aspects of our engineering organization, which consists of approximately 30-50 individuals. This role focuses on managing engineers, their development, and the processes that ensure team efficiency, allowing technical leaders to concentrate on technical work.
Responsibilities
- Own the engineering hiring process end-to-end, including funnel design, interview processes, and candidate evaluation.
- Design role-specific interviews in collaboration with tech leads and improve overall funnel efficiency.
- Manage the twice-yearly review cycle, progression framework, and cross-team calibration.
- Make compensation recommendations and jointly decide on promotions with the CTO.
- Identify training or conference opportunities to support engineer growth.
- Diagnose reasons for slow progress and flag issues with the maintenance-to-development balance or process adherence.
- Provide metrics and reporting to help tech leads identify issues early.
- Advance our processes and standards based on experience in high-performing engineering organizations.
- Champion investment in developer user experience, including the adoption of LLM-based tooling.
- Experiment with new tools, processes, and techniques to assess their value.
- Manage cloud spend, SaaS estate and licensing.
- Oversee security processes, including starters and leavers.
- Manage company-wide onboarding for technical staff.
Requirements
- A software engineering background with the technical credibility to collaborate with senior individual contributors.
- Proven experience as a people manager of engineers, including managing review cycles, progression, and calibration.
- A track record of owning engineering hiring at volume, not just participating.
- Experience in engineering organizations of approximately 30-50 people, not a large-corporate background.
- Comfortable operating without dedicated HR, IT, or procurement teams.
- Extensive experience in improving processes, standards, and delivery in high-performing engineering teams.
- A collaborative approach focused on improving others' team performance.
- Fluent written and spoken English for effective communication.
