About the Role

Human Computer Lab is developing character robots that feel alive and responsive, starting with LeLamp, a robot that explores a new category of consumer robotics where everyday objects become interactive. The goal is to advance human-robot interaction by creating technology that is legible, emotionally intuitive, and human-centered, laying the groundwork for a new generation of robots for everyday environments. This internship focuses on supporting LeLamp's development through a blend of mechanical prototyping and controls work.

Responsibilities

  • Build and iterate on prototyping rigs, including mechanical assembly, wiring, and basic controls integration.
  • Perform lower-level controls tasks such as sensor wiring, calibration, and writing simple test scripts.
  • Assist with mechanical design tasks, including CAD iteration, fixture design, and fit checks.
  • Facilitate the integration of mechanical and controls as the product matures by running test-rig cycles, troubleshooting integration issues, and translating mechanical design changes into controls adjustments.
  • Document test results and clearly communicate identified issues to the team.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a degree in Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Some exposure to CAD (SolidWorks, Onshape, Fusion360, or similar) and basic controls/embedded work from class projects, personal builds, or prior internships.
  • Hands-on experience with rapid prototyping, machining, microcontrollers, or simple test rigs.
  • Comfortable jumping into unfamiliar systems and creating order.
  • A focus on users and a sense of ownership over outcomes.
  • Ability to think holistically about systems and approach problems creatively.
  • A generalist approach across the physical stack.
  • Ability to work quickly in rapid iteration cycles.
  • Willingness to take ownership over systems.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in small teams with minimal mentorship.
  • Curiosity, resourcefulness, and motivation to solve difficult problems.
