About the Role
Beacon Biosignals is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join our Datastore team. The Datastore is central to Beacon's platform, defining the data model and serving as the repository and API for brain data. This role focuses on designing and scaling backend systems for data infrastructure, including PostgreSQL data models, Kafka-driven event pipelines, and the GraphQL API.
Responsibilities
- Lead design and architecture for complex projects and systems within the Datastore.
- Partner with product managers, scientific and clinical stakeholders, and other development and support teams to translate requirements into new integrations, services, and solutions.
- Debug and profile ambiguous problems that cross system boundaries.
- Implement features with attention to detail, demonstrating product awareness and high standards for data integrity, design soundness, and maintainability.
- Draft RFCs to lead complex feature discovery and technical design phases.
- Plan own work and contribute to team planning, making reasoned trade-offs.
- Teach and mentor other engineers regularly, give feedback, and act as tech lead or coordination point for engineering practice.
- Leverage feedback to improve operational robustness and ease of use of the Datastore and its services.
- Lead design across the breadth of the platform (Datastore Systems role).
- Design event-driven pipelines end to end (Datastore Systems role).
- Lead the design of complex systems rather than individual components (Datastore Systems role).
- Be the person the rest of the team comes to about the database (PostgreSQL & Data Modeling role).
- Design the schema itself: entities, relationships, and constraints (PostgreSQL & Data Modeling role).
- Handle schema evolution under load, including zero-downtime migrations (PostgreSQL & Data Modeling role).
- Operate PostgreSQL in production (PostgreSQL & Data Modeling role).
- Teach, review, and document database practices to ensure schema coherence (PostgreSQL & Data Modeling role).
Requirements
- 7+ years of backend development experience.
- At least 3 years focused on data platforms and backend infrastructure for data-centric applications.
- Highly proficient in at least one technical area: data modeling, distributed systems, API design, or database engineering.
- Strong proficiency in SQL, with production experience working with PostgreSQL as an application database.
- Write and tune queries fluently and comfortable reasoning about schema design, indexes, and query plans.
- Hands-on experience with data streaming and event processing using Kafka or an equivalent.
- Proficiency in Julia or Python.
- Experience deploying and operating services in containerized environments.
- Familiarity with Kubernetes and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform and/or Helm.
- A track record of mentoring engineers and improving team practices.
- Collaborative mindset.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, especially in asynchronous and remote-friendly environments.
- Self-directed approach, with a track record of thriving in hybrid or fully remote teams.
- Experience with, or interest in, using LLM-assisted or agentic coding tools in a production setting.
- Experience writing complex SQL queries by hand.
- Prepared to reason about schema design, indexes, and query behavior.
- Experience with GraphQL and TypeScript/JavaScript (Node.js) (Datastore Systems role).
- Deep PostgreSQL knowledge, including reasoning about the query planner, index selection, and EXPLAIN (ANALYZE) (PostgreSQL & Data Modeling role).
- Experience with data modeling, including modeling time and handling corrections (PostgreSQL & Data Modeling role).
- Experience with schema evolution under load, including zero-downtime migrations, dual-write transitions, lock avoidance, backfill and verification (PostgreSQL & Data Modeling role).
- Experience operating PostgreSQL in production, including upgrades, replication, backup and restore, connection pooling, bloat and vacuum behavior, and extensions (PostgreSQL & Data Modeling role).
- Ability to make others good at database practices through teaching, reviewing, and documenting (PostgreSQL & Data Modeling role).
