About the Role

Alt is unlocking the value of alternative assets, starting with the $5B trading-card market. We let collectors buy, sell, vault, and finance their cards in one place. Our next frontier is real-time pricing at scale—the Alt Value that powers every trade, loan, and product on the platform. This role owns how money physically moves at Alt: the providers, the rails, the orchestration layer that routes between them, and the risk posture that keeps a marketplace of high-value transactions safe. The ledger team owns the record; you own everything that happens between a customer's bank and that record. You are not building a checkout flow; you are building the liquidity that makes this marketplace work. The key performance indicators are 99.99% reliability on gateway and banking integrations, and a time-to-funds for sellers and borrowers that we measure, publish, and beat every quarter. In payments, 'mostly working' is a failure.

Responsibilities

  • Own rails and money movement, including ACH origination and returns, RTP and other instant rails, wires, cards, and stablecoin settlement.
  • Design for both $300K wire and $300 ACH debit transactions with appropriate controls.
  • Own the product consequences of credit-push rails, including auto-charge timing and fund finality.
  • Develop provider architecture and orchestration, including multi-PSP integrations and a single orchestration layer that routes movements by cost, speed, and health.
  • Implement webhook handling, idempotency, retry semantics, state machines, failure mode handling, and provider failover.
  • Manage payouts and collections, ensuring sellers and borrowers receive funds faster than competitors.
  • Oversee instant payout options, batch payouts at auction close, and the associated rail and timing choices.
  • Manage cash advance disbursement and scheduled auto-pay batches for repayments.
  • Manage risk on high-value flows, including fraud, dispute, and chargeback posture for high-value transactions.
  • Implement holds, limits, and settlement windows based on data, considering conversion costs.
  • Develop step-up verification triggered by risk signals rather than blanket friction.
  • Own payment operations, including troubleshooting stuck transfers, unfamiliar return codes, and provider issues.
  • Develop tooling for operations and support to answer customer inquiries about fund status without engineering intervention.
  • Provide clean, complete processor data to the ledger team for reconciliation.
  • Build against and push on the posting contract for the ledger team, ensuring exactly-once delivery.
  • Make trade-off calls between shipping speed and reliability, and between building custom solutions versus buying orchestration platforms.
  • Act as a multiplier through rigorous code reviews, technical documentation, and mentorship.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience with a heavy focus on backend systems (Python, Postgres, AWS).
  • Experience with real money movement, including ACH origination and returns, RTP or FedNow, wires, or equivalent.
  • Understanding of NACHA return windows and the impact of credit-push rails on product flow.
  • Experience integrating more than one payment provider in production and managing provider failures.
  • Experience handling large transactions where failure has immediate, significant financial consequences.
  • Proficiency with API concepts: webhooks, idempotency, eventual consistency, and exactly-once delivery.
  • Strong SQL and relational design skills, capable of writing transactions that perform under load.
  • Experience with marketplace or two-sided flow, including settlement and timing tensions.
  • Obsession with reliability, including deep thinking about idempotency, race conditions, and retry logic.
  • Product-owner mindset, understanding fund flows and clear user communication of financial status.
  • Pragmatism in choosing between custom solutions and third-party leverage.
  • Direct experience with Stripe, Plaid, Airwallex, PayPal, Modern Treasury, or Increase is strongly preferred.
  • Experience evaluating or building a payment orchestration layer across multiple providers is strongly preferred.
  • Hands-on experience with risk tooling like Sardine, Sift, or Stripe Radar is a strong plus.
  • Familiarity with React and TypeScript to ship payment-method and payout surfaces is a strong plus.
  • Experience with distributed systems, stablecoin or on-chain settlement, KYC/KYB, bank partnerships, or bank-sponsor programs is a bonus.
  • Interest in the alternative asset space or experience as a collector is a bonus.
