About the Role

Starr, a global leader in commercial insurance, seeks an Actuarial Pricing professional to deliver technical pricing, maintain independent pricing views, and conduct calibration exercises. This role involves owning and stewarding pricing models, acting as a business partner to underwriting divisions, and providing actuarial challenge on pricing matters. You will also be responsible for analytics, management information, and contributing to business planning and risk assessment.

Responsibilities

  • Own and deliver technical pricing across assigned classes of business, including case pricing, portfolio pricing, and ad hoc analytical work.
  • Maintain independent and objective pricing views, remaining commercially aware and sensitive to business needs without being subject to commercial pressure.
  • Conduct calibration exercises across assigned classes to reduce model adjustments, bias, and noise in deployed pricing models.
  • Review underwriting adjustments to model outputs, assessing their suitability and escalating material concerns.
  • Ensure appropriate pricing controls are embedded within all deployed pricing models.
  • Contribute to business planning for all classes within the divisional remit, coordinating the pricing function's input.
  • Hold accountability for all pricing models deployed to the business within the assigned division, including sign-off on model releases.
  • Maintain technical competency to interrogate pricing model databases, update model parameters, perform code changes, and review back-testing results.
  • Maintain awareness of how pricing systems are implemented and maintained to enable effective oversight and collaboration.
  • Provide specifications and requirements for model developments, taking ownership of the output.
  • Adhere to all pricing governance policies, including those governing the review, approval, and release of models into production.
  • Deliver training to underwriting teams on deployed pricing models.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for the assigned underwriting division, building trusted working relationships.
  • Represent the pricing function at Pricing Committee, presenting items originating from the assigned division.
  • Provide actuarial challenge on pricing-related matters, maintaining a clear boundary between actuarial and underwriting judgement.
  • Support functions outside of underwriting on actuarial pricing matters pertaining to the assigned division.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for regulatory queries relating to class-specific pricing matters.
  • Monitor and report pricing metrics across the assigned division, including pricing adequacy and risk-adjusted rate change (RARC).
  • Develop MI to identify underperforming segments and inform portfolio optimisation decisions.
  • Coordinate the design and delivery of class-specific management information.
  • Propose rate changes and conduct impact analyses, presenting findings to senior stakeholders.
  • Work closely with the Exposure Management team to monitor risk aggregations.
  • Contribute to the annual planning cycle and the feedback loop between planning, reserving, pricing, and capital.

Requirements

  • Qualified UK actuary or equivalent, with actuarial skills applied in a general insurance pricing context.
  • Proven pricing knowledge across London Market or specialty lines of business, including delegated authority contracts and large open market accounts.
  • Ability to maintain independent and objective analytical views in a commercial environment, with strong awareness of the boundary between actuarial and underwriting judgement.
  • Experience delivering case pricing, calibration exercises, MI development, and portfolio analysis.
  • Strong collaboration and stakeholder management skills, with demonstrated ability to build trusted relationships with underwriting teams.
  • Experience managing or directing junior actuarial staff, including technical supervision and peer review.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience presenting to senior stakeholders.
  • Experience working across multiple lines of business or in a divisional actuary capacity within the London Market (preferred).
  • Familiarity with pricing software and model governance frameworks, including experience using or overseeing hx Renew or similar platforms (preferred).
  • Experience with programming in Python or R (preferred).
  • Knowledge of Lloyd's regulatory requirements, AFR processes, and PRA/FCA pricing-related conduct expectations (preferred).
