About the Role

Assembled is seeking a design engineer to lead the next generation of its design system. This role involves defining the visual and interaction foundations of the product, building components, patterns, and a design language to ensure cohesive, accessible, and high-quality user experiences. The position also offers the opportunity to shape the design systems for AI-native products and pioneer AI-assisted design workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the next generation of Assembled's design system, defining visual language, interaction foundations, components, and patterns for desktop and mobile experiences.
  • Establish how the design system evolves by creating documentation, a contribution model, and governance.
  • Define reusable interaction patterns for AI-native products, focusing on how users direct, trust, review, and collaborate with AI agents.
  • Pioneer AI-assisted design-system workflows in partnership with the Design Systems Engineer.
  • Extend the design system by partnering with product teams to address complex workflows and enterprise needs.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of experience designing and shipping production B2B software, with significant ownership of a design system used across multiple teams or products.
  • Exceptional visual craft and a high standard for design quality.
  • Proficiency in systems thinking, focusing on primitives, reusable patterns, and the impact of details.
  • Hands-on experience structuring Figma libraries, tokens, variables, components, and documentation.
  • Understanding of how design systems reach production, with the ability to collaborate with frontend engineers on component APIs, responsive behavior, accessibility, states, and implementation tradeoffs.
  • Experience enabling other designers by creating approachable systems and clear documentation.
  • Ability to move quickly, ship, and be comfortable with ambiguity.
  • Excitement about AI-native design workflows and the role of design systems in accelerating development.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with engineering, design, and leadership.
  • Experience using coding or design agents (e.g., Cursor, Claude, Figma AI) is a plus.
  • Experience with instrumenting or measuring design-system adoption/adherence, or running large-scale component migrations is a plus.
