About the Role
We are seeking a Design Engineer to contribute to the development of a legal tech platform for AI-native law firms. This role involves owning the development of secure client portals and enterprise-grade systems, from architecture to production, with a focus on both software functionality and user experience. The position offers broad scope and high ownership, requiring work across AI systems architecture and full-stack engineering.
Responsibilities
- Evolve the design system into scalable components and tokens for rapid and aesthetically pleasing project delivery.
- Identify and promote recurring platform patterns into documented primitives for designer and engineer use.
- Build system guardrails, including token linting, visual regression testing, and AI-readable component documentation.
- Translate the design system into components and tokens for efficient and attractive screen development.
- Collaborate with design on AI-native interface patterns, including progressive disclosure and streaming states.
- Define backend and UI contracts, covering data fetching, caching, and state management.
- Own client and attorney-facing screens, ensuring a positive user experience.
- Develop loading, empty, error, partial, and permission-restricted states as integral parts of features.
- Prioritize accessibility, performance, and failure recovery as acceptance criteria.
- Own end-to-end features for the legal tech platform, including client portals and case management.
- Design production-grade APIs, data models, and permission systems for a regulated domain.
- Build infrastructure for evaluating and improving AI agent performance, including eval systems, retrieval, and agent orchestration.
- Develop harness engineering tools and guardrails for secure and reliable company-wide development.
Requirements
- 7+ years of experience building production software, with demonstrated expertise in at least one area (backend systems, infra, ML/AI systems, frontend, etc.).
- Experience building or significantly shaping a production design system, including component APIs, tokens, theming, and documentation.
- Proven track record of delivering features that yield measurable business outcomes.
- Proficiency with relational database design and data modeling.
- Hands-on experience deploying and operating services on a major cloud platform.
- Fluency with AI coding tools as a daily workflow component.
- Demonstrated ability to self-teach unfamiliar systems and contribute effectively.
- Strong first-principles and systems thinking for analyzing and understanding complex systems.
- Experience with TypeScript, React, GCP, and PostgreSQL.
- Experience making design systems legible to AI coding tools (e.g., through machine-readable documentation, token linting, visual regression testing).
- Deep engagement with the AI tooling ecosystem, including experimentation with new tools and models.
- Experience with eval systems, retrieval, agent orchestration, or ML in production.
- Background in building client portals, CRMs, or case management systems.
- Familiarity with legal tech or other regulated industries.
