About the Role
Ocean Infinity is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead a group of engineers within the Core Engineering team, focusing on people management, organizational capability, and engineering capacity. This senior role involves managing engineers, ensuring their development, and aligning them with organizational priorities, rather than owning technical architecture or product roadmaps.
Responsibilities
- Line-manage a group of engineers, including regular 1:1s, feedback, and career development.
- Own performance management, recognition, and reward for engineers.
- Lead recruitment, onboarding, and retention efforts for the engineering group.
- Manage capacity and resource planning, including deployment decisions and constraint flagging.
- Allocate engineers to projects and manage workload to ensure timely and high-quality delivery.
- Collaborate with the product team and other leads to resolve resource constraints and balance competing demands.
- Build succession and technical leadership pipelines within the group and identify capability gaps.
- Maintain team health, engagement, and working environment, escalating issues that threaten delivery.
Requirements
- Several years of experience managing and developing software engineers, preferably in a scaling organization.
- Proven ability to hire, retain, and develop engineering talent, including those moving into senior or lead roles.
- Proficiency in balancing competing demands for engineering capacity across multiple projects or squads.
- Strong skills in 1:1s, coaching, and feedback, with the ability to handle performance issues fairly.
- Sufficient technical credibility to gain the trust of managed engineers.
- Comfort with capacity/resource planning and making trade-off decisions under constraints.
- Genuine commitment to employee development and willingness to address performance issues directly.
- Experience managing distributed or multi-location teams (nice to have).
- Previous experience in marine, defense, or aerospace (nice to have).
