About the Role

The Data Scientist will transform Emory's clinical and operational data into actionable insights, models, and AI tools for leaders and clinicians. This role involves working with physician leaders, operations, and finance to answer critical questions about patient care, physician productivity, and data extraction from clinical text. You will leverage the Emory Unified Data Platform (UDP) using SQL, Python/PySpark, R, Power BI, and AI agents.

Responsibilities

  • Build trusted datasets and measures from Epic data (Clarity / Caboodle), defining cohorts and metrics with clinical and business owners, writing SQL/PySpark, and validating numbers against existing reports.
  • Develop and deploy statistical and machine-learning models for operational and clinical questions, managing the process from exploration to production pipelines in Fabric/Azure, including monitoring and documentation.
  • Apply NLP and LLMs to clinical text (pathology, radiology, clinical notes) to extract structured facts, ensuring accuracy through test sets, evaluation, and human review.
  • Deliver Power BI semantic models and reports, and conversational data agents that answer leader questions in plain English, with appropriate security.
  • Protect patient data by adhering to minimum-necessary access, de-identification where possible, HIPAA, and understanding IRB boundaries.
  • Communicate results, definitions, and caveats clearly to physicians and executives, providing concise, plain-language documentation.
  • Improve team standards through reusable code, peer review, versioned definitions, and mentoring analysts.

Requirements

  • Experience with Epic data (Clarity, Caboodle, Cogito) and its clinical and revenue-cycle concepts.
  • Experience with Microsoft Fabric/Azure (lakehouses, Spark notebooks, Power BI semantic models and DAX, Azure AI Foundry).
  • Experience with NLP/LLM work on clinical text, including evaluation and human-in-the-loop review.
  • Experience with PHI handling, quality improvement vs research/IRB.
  • Experience with healthcare operations metrics (LOS, throughput, productivity) or oncology/quality-improvement analytics.
  • Experience with semantic models, reports, and AI data agents, including security.
  • Familiarity with research data standards (OMOP, FHIR) and IRB processes.
  • Experience with version control (Git), Agile delivery, and MLOps.
  • Proficiency in SQL on large healthcare data, ideally Epic.
  • Proficiency in Python or R.
  • A validation mindset, able to articulate discussions about discrepancies in data.
  • Excellent communication skills with physicians and executives.
  • Experience with clinical text NLP or LLMs, including evaluation.
  • Experience with Fabric, Power BI, or Azure (trainable).
  • At least 5 years of experience in healthcare or data analytics.
  • At least 2 years of experience working for payor companies or healthcare systems.
  • At least 2 years of experience in relational databases.
  • Proficient in SQL and at least one other programming language (e.g., Python, R, SAS).
  • Experience in statistical modeling, machine learning, and AI.
  • Excellent presentation skills.
  • Experience in strategic planning and workflow optimization.
  • Ability to mentor and coach the broader analytic team and service line operation leaders.
