About the Role
We are seeking an engineer with strong CS fundamentals, object-oriented design, relational data modeling, and a systems mindset to set technical direction and drive innovation within Member Growth's systems. This role emphasizes architectural thinking, platform strategy, and problem-solving to achieve high leverage and impact.
Responsibilities
- Set technical direction for Member Growth's systems, owning architecture and its evolution across pods.
- Identify and prioritize high-leverage problems and opportunities in the funnel, platform, and work processes.
- Write technical proposals, design documents, and RFCs with clear recommendations, options, and tradeoffs.
- Make system-level decisions regarding the use of eventing, workflow orchestration, caching, async pipelines, and new services.
- Design for horizontal scalability and low, uniform latency under real traffic patterns.
- Decompose existing services into scalable components and plan migration paths.
- Collaborate cross-team and cross-functionally with Frontend Core, Backend Core, Data, and other product teams.
- Break down ambiguous, multi-team problems into actionable plans with clear ownership.
- Build consensus with engineers, Product, and leadership, disagreeing clearly and committing fully.
- Tie engineering decisions to outcomes, instrumenting and defending shipped work with data.
- Emphasize test-driven development, quality, reliability, and observability from the start.
- Present product and design options with a recommendation, not a single predetermined path.
- Define standards for design, code, and operations, mentoring and elevating team members.
- Own Service Level Agreements (SLAs) for Member Growth systems and maintain their health.
- Leverage AI tooling to multiply personal and team output.
Requirements
- 8+ years of experience building and operating high-traffic, customer-facing systems, including technical leadership across multiple teams.
- Strong CS fundamentals: object-oriented design, relational database design, and systems reasoning.
- Fluency at the system and cloud level, including eventing (Kafka, SNS, SQS), workflow orchestration (Temporal, Airflow, DAGs), distributed systems tradeoffs, caching, async pipelines, idempotency, and backpressure.
- Comfortable working across different layers and stacks; language is a tool, not an identity.
- Working knowledge of AWS (Lambda, S3, CloudWatch, SQS, etc.) and clear reasoning about tradeoffs between different database types.
- A track record of shipping high-impact, customer-facing features in production at scale.
- A track record of setting technical direction, including writing proposals, adopting architectures, landing migrations, and establishing standards.
- Strong written and visual communication skills, using diagrams, design docs, and proposals to articulate thoughts.
- Ability to influence without authority, aligning engineers, Product, and leadership across teams.
- Proven ability to measurably level up the engineers around them.
- Concise, high-altitude communication style, defaulting to options plus recommendation.
- Member-first orientation: Customer, Team, and Business, in that order.
- Observability and monitoring experience (New Relic, Datadog, or similar) to maintain SLA, Apdex, and error rate.
- Experience in growth, e-commerce, subscription, or membership is a plus, including funnels, experimentation, attribution and pixels, payments and recurring billing.
