About the Role
We are hiring a Staff Software Engineer for our Infrastructure team. This role involves shaping how Stream spends and grows by building the infrastructure every Stream product runs on, including those not yet built. You will be trusted with significant decisions from your first few weeks, focusing on system design, strong fundamentals, and good code, with an expectation to leverage AI for DevOps-heavy tasks.
Responsibilities
- Define platform standards, including latency and uptime SLOs for product teams.
- Lead design reviews and make infrastructure decisions regarding hosting and execution environments.
- Develop internal platform tooling, services, and documentation to accelerate engineering workflows.
- Address incidents by implementing durable fixes rather than workarounds.
- Integrate cost considerations into all design decisions and provide cost visibility to teams.
Requirements
- Experience as a software engineer who has built systems, not just configured them.
- Proficiency in writing production code in Go, Python, or a similar language.
- Strong system design capabilities, including reasoning about failure modes, capacity, and cost in distributed systems.
- Solid fundamentals in networking, storage, and concurrency.
- Experience owning high-scale production systems and setting technical direction.
- Demonstrated ability to experiment with and learn new technologies like Kubernetes, databases, or cloud services.
- Daily use of AI tools in engineering work.
- Ability to treat cost and reliability as engineering problems with quantifiable outcomes.
- Clear writing skills for documentation and standards.
- Comfort working in a small team environment with the ability to set direction and review code.
- Experience with Kubernetes in production (cluster architecture, workload design, or migration).
- Experience with PostgreSQL at scale, ideally self-hosted or with CloudNativePG.
- Experience with Valkey or Redis at scale, ideally on Kubernetes.
- Hands-on experience with AWS and GCP, including multi-cloud setups or migrations.
- Experience with cloud commitment and reservation strategy or formal FinOps practice.
- Experience with SLO design, alert hygiene, and Prometheus/Grafana observability stacks.
- Experience with real-time systems such as WebSockets, WebRTC, or streaming.
- Open source contributions, or public speaking/writing on cloud, platform, or distributed systems.
