About the Role

The Senior Immigration Staff Attorney provides comprehensive immigration legal services to Her Justice clients, focusing on low-income women and gender-diverse individuals, including survivors of violence. This role involves legal consultations, case assessments, advice, brief services, preparing cases for pro bono placement, and managing a small direct representation caseload. A key component is supporting the pro bono model by preparing cases, developing strategy, and mentoring volunteer attorneys. The attorney will also develop trainings, resources, and collaborate with the immigration team to strengthen the practice and stay current on legal developments. The position requires strong legal judgment, effective case management, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively, with a commitment to professionalism, cultural responsiveness, and sensitivity to trauma survivors.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct intake consultations and assess the legal issues of prospective clients for brief services and suitability for pro bono placement.
  • Provide advice, counsel, and brief legal services to women and gender diverse people seeking assistance with immigration issues.
  • Deliver client-centered, trauma-informed legal services with sensitivity to survivors of intimate partner violence, sexual violence, trafficking, and other forms of trauma.
  • Prepare cases for pro bono placement, including in-person client meetings, document gathering, initial advice, and case summary preparation.
  • Maintain a small direct representation caseload of immigration clients, independently assessing legal issues, developing case strategies, and representing clients.
  • Assist with cultivating volunteer attorneys by making presentations at firms, corporations, and bar associations.
  • Serve as a liaison with law firms and build relationships to enhance the pro bono program and ensure appropriate client placement.
  • Mentor and provide substantive legal support to volunteer attorneys, including case strategy, legal research, document review, and troubleshooting.
  • Monitor the progress and quality of pro bono matters and maintain timely and accurate case information.
  • Assist in organizing and implementing lawyer trainings, including serving as faculty and creating training materials.
  • Manage and coordinate legal clinics with partnering law firms.
  • Work with the immigration team to assess, develop, and strengthen the Her Justice immigration practice.
  • Stay current on developments in immigration law, policy, procedure, and practice.
  • Conduct legal research and analysis on emerging immigration issues and contribute to practice guidance.
  • Participate in community outreach workshops, clinics, and public education initiatives.
  • Serve as a substantive immigration law resource to Her Justice staff.
  • Maintain complete, accurate, and timely case records and data.
  • Contribute to data collection, case review, and program reporting.
  • Recruit, train, mentor, and provide guidance to interns, law students, and volunteers.
  • Participate in committees, working groups, and policy or systemic reform initiatives.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with community-based organizations and legal services providers.
  • Facilitate appropriate referrals for clients whose needs fall outside Her Justice’s scope of services.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience practicing immigration law.
  • Substantial experience providing direct legal services to immigrant clients.
  • Experience representing or accompanying clients before USCIS, Immigration Court, ICE, or other government agencies.
  • Strong substantive knowledge of immigration law, policy, and procedure.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess eligibility for immigration relief, identify legal issues, and develop case strategies.
  • Experience representing clients in immigration matters relevant to Her Justice’s practice, including humanitarian and other forms of immigration relief.
  • Experience providing legal services to low-income, underserved, or marginalized communities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and sensitively with clients who have experienced trauma.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor, advise, or provide substantive legal guidance to attorneys, law students, or other legal professionals.
  • Professional proficiency or fluency in Spanish or another language commonly spoken by Her Justice clients.
  • Strong legal research, writing, analytical, and oral advocacy skills.
  • Strong case management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to independently manage a caseload, competing priorities, and time-sensitive deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate complex legal concepts effectively to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, work independently, and collaborate effectively.
