About the Role
New York Edge is seeking a Community School Director (CSD) to establish a strong leadership presence within a school building throughout the academic year. This role integrates social services into schools, fostering collaboration among principals, parents, teachers, and community-based organizations (CBOs) to improve academic performance.
Responsibilities
- Accountable for ensuring a safe and compliant environment for youth, meeting all organizational and regulatory requirements.
- Serve as an advisor to the principal, coordinating partner work and aligning it with school faculty.
- Work with school leadership to track progress and ensure data-driven operations.
- Responsible for recruiting and supervising qualified staff.
- Organize and oversee needs assessments to determine student and family needs.
- Serve as a point person for potential partners and broker new partnerships.
- Identify high-need students, coordinate interventions, and monitor their impact.
- Build relationships to link the school day with expanded learning opportunities.
- Facilitate alliances with city agencies and non-profit partners to create a continuum of services.
- Provide training and technical assistance for culturally and linguistically appropriate services.
- Support resource management and development, including fund development and grant maintenance.
- Coordinate space allocation for student/family support services and special events.
- Oversee program activities including expanded learning time, parent engagement, mental health, and summer activities.
- Participate in school governance and various meetings.
- Assess student and family needs, develop intervention strategies, monitor progress, and make referrals.
- Cultivate positive relations with school administration, teachers, parents, and community constituents.
- Collaborate with Community School partners on program delivery to align with student achievement goals.
- Establish parent involvement in advocacy, special events, operations, education, and trips.
- Promote the Community School within the community through outreach and event attendance.
- Create and distribute program updates, attend outreach events, and act as the organization's lead ambassador.
- Identify and utilize community resources.
- Keep supervisor informed of site information and challenges.
- Ensure program compliance with DOE and DOHMH regulations, and pandemic management requirements.
- Monitor program compliance, including student registration, ratios, attendance, IDs, and virtual learning.
- Ensure student attendance information is collected and delivered to the Data Department weekly.
- Ensure new hires complete necessary steps before starting work, including background clearances and training.
- Ensure timesheets are accurately completed and submitted to Payroll on time.
- Maintain accurate records for staff, programs, and materials.
- Report site injuries and communicate incidents immediately.
- Ensure budgetary compliance and timely submission of reports to funding sources.
- Track and manage equipment and supplies.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Education, Psychology, or Social Work.
- At least 18.0 credit hours from an accredited college or university in Child Development, Elementary Education, Physical Education, Recreation, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience in urban education or community organizing.
- At least one (1) year of supervisory experience.
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience working with youth & adolescents in New York City.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and manage priorities while maintaining a positive demeanor.
- Strong understanding of New York City and New York State education requirements in an urban setting.
- Excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills.
- Proven ability to interact with a diverse range of individuals tactfully and discreetly.
- Ability to articulate outcome requirements and provide necessary resources and support.
- Ability to de-escalate potentially risky or difficult situations.
- Proficiency in Google Suite, Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and Word.
- Must be able to obtain safety and security clearances through the Department of Education and Department of Health.
