About the Role
The Oncology Referral Specialist acts as the initial contact for patients, family, community members, and referral sources for cancer center patients or those at high risk for cancer. This role coordinates with administration systems, processes, and procedures to ensure appropriate evaluation, care, and referrals, focusing on a patient-centered referral process and timely patient appointments.
Responsibilities
- Provide telephone and in-person screening and initial contact with referral sources and potential patients.
- Coordinate the intake and referral process, determining priority needs for assessment.
- Provide coordination of testing with physician, patient, facility, and payer, including reviewing medical documents, ensuring clinical steps are taken, and obtaining third-party approval.
- Obtain all procedure and diagnosis codes to properly authorize/pre-certify ordered testing.
- Refer self-pay and out-of-network patients to appropriate resources for payment assistance.
- Complete pre-certification/authorization with the patient’s insurance company, providing necessary documentation.
- Document authorization/pre-certification upon receipt, including contact information.
- Contact patients to notify them of scheduled procedures and provide necessary instructions.
- Actively monitor attendance and follow-up of referred appointments.
- Monitor statistics and volume of patient testing and physician appointments.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- 3 years of experience in a health care setting.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to undertake a variety of diverse tasks and work in a multidisciplinary team.
- Ability to think and work independently and with direction.
- Ability to communicate with staff members in a fast-paced environment.

- Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM or 8:30AM to 5:00 PM
Experience Level
- 3 years of experience in a health care setting
Education Level
- Associate's degree in a related field, HS diploma or equivalent
Salary/Compensations
- $19.00 - $24.00
