About the Role

The Spanish interpreter provides interpreting services for all clinical and professional University of Rochester Medical Center staff, patients, and family members. Services are generally provided at the Medical Center, Outpatient Clinics, and Hospital Affiliates.

Responsibilities

  • Manages communication flow between languages during healthcare encounters across diverse clinical specialties in inpatient and ambulatory settings.
  • Responds to pages within established timeframes for outpatient, inpatient, and Emergency Department services.
  • Interprets all assignments in a timely and professional manner.
  • Determines the situational context of patient interactions in collaboration with healthcare providers.
  • Informs all parties of the interpreter's role and briefs healthcare professionals on relevant patient or encounter information.
  • Assesses and recommends the most effective communication method for patients with communication barriers or special needs.
  • Verifies patient's preferred language is correctly identified.
  • Selects the appropriate mode for optimal communication flow (consecutive, simultaneous, sight-translation).
  • Proposes the most suitable service delivery modality (in-person, video, telephone) based on patient needs.
  • Debriefs with healthcare professionals to optimize understanding and provide linguistic and cultural insights.
  • Monitors for linguistic misunderstandings and recommends adjustments to formality and style.
  • Prioritizes and responds to multiple service requests based on urgency and patient acuity.
  • Supports cultural responsiveness by assessing cross-cultural impact on communication.
  • Monitors for cultural misunderstandings and devises interventions as needed.
  • Facilitates understanding of cultural differences and promotes direct communication.
  • Informs patients of available supports (Social Worker, Case Manager, etc.).
  • Promotes inclusive and equitable communication.
  • Contributes as an integral member of healthcare teams as a specialist in language and culture.
  • Provides interdisciplinary education to team members for effective communication.
  • Facilitates meaningful access to URMC health programs for patients with limited English proficiency to ensure compliance with various regulations and standards.
  • Identifies interpreting service needs and informs program leadership of recommendations for service enhancements.
  • Applies established national healthcare interpreter code of ethics and standards of practice.
  • Adheres to Joint Commission Standards, department policies, safety protocols, and infection control standards.
  • Completes service provision documentation in the electronic medical record.
  • Discloses and justifies any potential limitations, conflicts, or need for recusal appropriately and timely.
  • Supports and upholds patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA.
  • Intervenes impartially and transparently within professional boundaries to protect autonomy, dignity, and safety.
  • Maintains interpreter performance-based skills.
  • Enhances skills through professional development activities.
  • Completes scheduled training and other required staff activities.
  • Completes all documentation, paperwork, and administrative duties, including eRecord completion and database entries.

Requirements

  • High school diploma and two years of post-high school education or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • Associate’s degree required.
  • Must be fluent in English and Spanish with strong verbal and written skills in both languages.
  • Knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, pathology, clinical tests and procedures in working languages.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Completion of 40-hour training course in medical interpreting required.
