About the Role
The Canadian Cancer Society is working tirelessly to save lives, improve cancer patients' quality of life, and unite Canadians to change cancer forever. As a member of the Communications team, the Manager, Mission Communications is responsible for developing communication strategies, plans, and tools to raise awareness of the Society's mission among external audiences. This role supports communication activities in public affairs, health policy, prevention, cancer information, and support services, including content creation, project management, and media relations.
Responsibilities
- Develop communication plans and tools aligned with the organization's overall mission and priorities to enhance awareness, engagement, and revenue.
- Develop strategies to raise awareness of the Society's impact in public affairs, health policy, prevention, cancer information, and support services.
- Write, edit, and disseminate various dynamic communication materials, such as press releases, key messages, FAQs, briefing notes, speeches, and presentations.
- Manage and develop a high-performing mission communications team, fostering a positive, collaborative, and inclusive corporate culture.
- Identify opportunities to showcase the Society's leadership in public affairs, prevention, and support across all communication activities, focusing on results and innovation.
- Enhance the Society's visibility, relevance, and trustworthiness by aligning mission needs with donor impact through consistent storytelling.
- Maintain relationships with key internal and external stakeholders to coordinate communication efforts supporting the implementation of national action plans.
- Identify emerging issues in public affairs, health policy, prevention, or cancer information and support services, and provide advice and proactively seize opportunities to advance the Society's perspective.
- Evaluate communication performance by tracking progress, achievements, and gaps, and adjusting strategies based on data and analytics.
- Prioritize audience-focused content written in plain language that builds emotional and intellectual connections to drive engagement.
- Provide timely support to the communications team on research, as needed.
- Foster a high-performance culture that leverages the unique talents and strengths of each team member while encouraging their growth and development.
- Make the Society a shining star against cancer.
- Contribute to our culture of Belonging, Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity (BIDE) by ensuring all staff feel represented, valued, and heard in all aspects of their identity, including gender, age, religion, ethnicity, nationality, race, and sexuality.
- Perform any other assigned tasks.
Requirements
- Post-secondary degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field, and at least five years of communications experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience in managing communication and public relations strategies and tactics, including media collaboration.
- Excellent synthesis and writing skills, with the ability to communicate complex topics and strategic initiatives to diverse audiences through various channels.
- Strong proofreading skills and meticulous attention to detail.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative, when appropriate, while working under pressure with often changing deadlines.
- Proven ability to problem-solve, think outside the box, and find creative solutions.
- Excellent oral communication skills and the ability to interact with diplomacy and tact with colleagues, the public, media, government officials, and health sector stakeholders.
- Excellent organizational, project management, time management, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Experience with AI technologies (Copilot) is an asset.
- Experience with media monitoring (Meltwater, Cision), reporting, and analysis is an asset.
- Good understanding and knowledge of the cancer, healthcare, and non-profit sectors is an asset.
- Experience in public affairs or government relations is an asset.
- Bilingualism (French/English) is strongly desired, with French being an asset due to the organization's national operations and the need for effective communication across regions.
- Other qualifications may apply.
- For positions based in Quebec, French is required. Knowledge of another language may be required depending on the nature of the duties and business needs.
