About the Role
As a Visual Impairment Rehabilitation Officer, you will support residents with sensory impairments to build practical skills, confidence, and independence within their local communities.
Responsibilities
- Carry out needs-led assessments and deliver tailored rehabilitation programmes for residents of all ages living with visual, hearing, or dual sensory impairments.
- Focus on practical daily living skills, mobility and orientation training, and low vision support.
- Provide specialist advice on accessible communication methods.
- Order essential equipment within allocated budgets.
- Educate around technology accessibility features.
- Signpost to relevant sensory services.
- Work closely with families, health professionals, housing teams, and voluntary sector partners to coordinate joint assessments.
- Chair network meetings to ensure comprehensive care.
- Act as a trusted adviser to promote accessible environments across public and residential venues.
- Contribute to service development projects.
- Maintain accurate records within Council IT systems.
- Operate under statutory frameworks including the Care Act, Mental Capacity Act, and safeguarding procedures.
- Conduct home assessments.
- Train residents on local routes.
- Collaborate with partner agencies.
Requirements
- Hands-on experience working directly with people with visual and hearing impairments.
- Experience carrying out needs-led assessments.
- Experience delivering practical mobility and orientation training.
- Familiarity with low vision services.
- Familiarity with dual sensory loss.
- Familiarity with relevant statutory legislation including the Care Act, Mental Capacity Act, and safeguarding procedures.
- Organised and proactive.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
- Strong risk management skills.
- Strong record-keeping skills.
- Confidence to manage a varied caseload autonomously.

- Undertake an enhanced DBS with Adults barred list.
