About the Role

The Occupational Therapist assesses, plans, and implements appropriate Occupational Therapy habilitative and rehabilitative treatment interventions for clients in various settings including hospitals, senior programs, mental health settings, clinical outpatient centers, home health, and public schools. This role is part of a Citywide Exam posting for a Permanent Civil Service position.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluation of client needs
  • Treatment planning
  • Implementation of occupational therapy treatment
  • Documenting treatment per facility and regulatory guidelines
  • Reassessment of client progress and treatment plan
  • Client discharge planning
  • Regular communication with rehabilitation team members, clients, client family members, and other health care or community partners regarding treatment programs and services
  • May include supervising assigned staff, students, interns, and volunteers

Requirements

  • Possession of a valid Occupational Therapy License issued by the California Board of Occupational Therapy (CBOT)
  • 3 months of pediatric experience (for CCS)
  • Possession of a valid Basic Life Support for Professional Rescuer (BLS) Certificate issued by the American Heart Association is required as a provision to employment; certificate must be obtained within two (2) weeks of the hire date and maintained throughout employment.
  • For Rehabilitation Department at ZSFG: experience working with individuals who have sustained poly-trauma, neurologic impairment, orthopedic injury, and general medicine patients.
  • For Department of Psychiatry at ZSFG: recent experience within the last year of working with people who have a mental health diagnosis, or successful completion of a 3-month internship in mental health.
  • For Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center: experience working with under-served San Francisco individuals, neurological impairments such as traumatic and acquired brain injury, spinal cord injury, polytrauma, and hand therapy.
  • For Health at Home: two (2) or more years of clinical experience and a desire to practice occupational therapy with a diverse patient population and on a dynamic and collaborative care team. Previous home health experience is not required but is highly desirable. Experience or strong desire to work with the underserved San Francisco population, high level of self-awareness, and comfort working in an autonomous environment are assets.
  • For California Children's Services (CCS) Medical Therapy Program: Applicants who are comfortable working in an autonomous environment are strongly desired.

Skills

  • Knowledge of disease processes and physical, mental and emotional disabilities
  • Ability to gather pertinent information from the individual’s medical record, patient, family, and medical staff
  • Ability to evaluate the patient and develop and implement appropriate treatment plans
  • Knowledge of the safe and proper treatment of patients
  • Ability to communicate the results of evaluations and treatments
  • Knowledge of health and safety standards
  • Experience leading a variety of evidenced-based practice groups (for Dept. of Psychiatry)
  • Familiarity with sensory modulation interventions (for Dept. of Psychiatry)
