About the Role

The New York Times is seeking a dynamic and hands-on HR Generalist to partner directly with Advertising, Marketing, Communications, Licensing, Partnerships, Wirecutter, and Events departments and the HRBP team. This role will serve as a primary contact for daily operational HR issues, processes, and project coordination for assigned client groups, balancing strategic support with operational execution.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with HRBPs, business leadership, cross-functional partners, and COEs to support various people initiatives, including performance management, goal setting, and annual compensation cycles.
  • Provide direct guidance to employees and line managers on HR policy interpretation, performance and employee relations inquiries, and workplace solutions.
  • Manage position opening and reconciliation against department hiring forecasts in collaboration with hiring managers, Finance, and Talent Acquisition.
  • Maintain strict data integrity within Workday by processing transactions and conducting regular audits.
  • Pull reports and reconcile data sets as requested.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of journalistic independence and the company's mission.

Requirements

  • 2 or more years of experience as an HR Generalist supporting matrixed departments.
  • Technical proficiency in using a cloud-based HRIS such as Workday (position management, transactions, and reporting).
  • Bachelor's degree and professional HR accreditation (e.g., SHRM-CP, PHR) is preferred.
  • Outstanding capabilities in project management and organizational planning are preferred.
  • Demonstrated history of establishing relationships and offering practical, solutions-focused guidance is preferred.
