About the Role
The Home Helper provides homemaking services to individuals and families, collaborating with the health care team to meet client needs and promote independence and well-being.
Responsibilities
- Performs light housekeeping for clients, including dusting, cleaning, vacuuming, mopping, laundry, and errands.
- Prepares meals and completes environmental risk assessments.
- Provides companionship and conversation to clients.
- Provides medication and appointment reminders.
- Observes and reports changes in client's home, physical, or emotional needs to the coordinator or supervisor.
- Adheres to VON standards for conduct and behavior, and upholds VON's Core Values.
- Promotes the goals and values of VON and their role as an integrated community care provider.
- Promotes a safe and healthy workplace in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and VON's Safety Management System.
- Abides by all VON policies, work practices, and confidentiality regulations.
- Works collaboratively with other staff in a team approach to service delivery.
- Engages with clients and their circle of care regarding changes to client plans and other relevant information.
Requirements
- Must have a personal vehicle, current driver’s license, and proof of vehicle insurance.
- Willingness to travel regularly to support sites and attend meetings.
- A current and original copy of a satisfactory Criminal Records Check is required.
- A Vulnerable Sector search and/or Child Abuse Registry check may be required.
- Completion of Health assessment and TB testing.
- Must be able to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Requires a detail-oriented approach in a dynamic environment.
- Requires physical activity including lifting, carrying, bending, reaching, kneeling, walking, sitting, standing, and climbing stairs.
- Some tasks require fine hand movements.

Experience Level
- 2-3 years’ experience working with seniors and persons with disability.
Education Level
- High school graduate.
- Post-Secondary school education preferred.
- Household management or professional customer service experience preferred.
- Experience working for a professional cleaning services organization preferred.
- Experience working with people from different social and economic environments preferred.
- Current CPR and First Aid certification is preferred.
