About the Role

The Youth Program Educator (YPE) develops strong, nurturing relationships with kindergarten through 12th grade students, the majority of whom are new to the United States. The YPE provides day-to-day academic support, facilitates enrichment activities, and maintains communications with families, school day staff, and community partners. The YPE is flexible with varying schedules and activities during the week.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate implementation of after school and summer programs for youth, Monday – Friday, including daily chaperoning and homework help.
  • Support youth in developing the skills they need to be successful in school and life.
  • Promote a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Plan and facilitate culturally relevant lesson plans, workshops, and activities focused on identity, leadership, academic enrichment and health and wellness.
  • Supervise a minimum of 10 students daily with various activities at the office and outside in the community.
  • Daily food prep and service to youth.
  • Support the recruitment of youth for after-school and summer programming to reach participation targets, including school and neighborhood outreach.
  • Support and build strong rapport with program participants to ensure retention and program success.
  • Communicate and work collaboratively with Program Manager and Youth Development members.
  • Maintain regular communications with families, school-day staff, and community partners.
  • Identify participants needing additional social and emotional one-on-one support to team.
  • Purchase program materials and supplies and maintain classroom organization/cleanliness.
  • Assist with supervising volunteers and youth workers.
  • Daily data entry, including but not limited to food service, Salesforce client data, funder-required reporting.
  • Attend agency events and meetings, team meetings, and professional development training; attend training required by funder.
  • Assist with organizing and facilitating agency-wide events and activities.
  • Collaborate with non-Youth Development staff on relevant youth-centric programming.
  • Other duties assigned by supervisor.

Requirements

  • 1 or more years’ experience working with diverse students in kindergarten through 12th grade.
  • Provide support to youth in 1:1 and small groups, up to 10 youth simultaneously.
  • Able to supervise youth at ratio of 1 staff to 10 youth minimum.
  • Demonstrate effectiveness in classroom management, including after school and summer programming.
  • Work effectively individually and in a team setting with or without supervision.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with both youth and adults.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 Office applications including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
  • Experience with data entry and CRM systems, preferably Salesforce.
  • Familiarity with project management platforms and online communications platforms such as Teams.
  • Must have adaptability to adopt new software and technologies and participate in the development of new such systems.
  • Bilingual and literate in Spanish, Arabic, Khmer, Lao, Thai, or Vietnamese language.
  • Formal education or certification in Early Childhood Education, including topics such as social-emotional learning, literacy development.
  • Experience working with schools and/or community organizations, NPOs.
  • Knowledge of youth development principles.
  • Passion for the organization's mission and values.
  • Attend meetings, trainings, and organizational events outside regular business hours, including occasional evenings and weekends, and travel locally as required.
  • Successfully complete fingerprinting background check and TB clearance before start date.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States.
