About the Role

The Youth Custody Service is transforming its workforce, and this role is vital in reshaping how children and young people are cared for in custody. As a Youth Justice Worker, you will be responsible for ensuring the security and safety of children and young people while providing day-to-day support in a custodial setting. Comprehensive training will equip you with the knowledge to understand diverse backgrounds and individual circumstances, and how your responses in complex situations can help these individuals build better futures. We are seeking individuals with a special ability to support and guide vulnerable children and young people.

Responsibilities

  • Ensuring the security and safety of children and young people.
  • Providing day-to-day support in a custodial setting.
  • Overseeing and facilitating safe movement around the site.
  • Providing supervision to ensure safety.
  • Handling interventions when necessary, including de-escalating situations, managing behavioural issues, and applying conflict resolution techniques.
  • Collaborating with young people, their families, or carers to agree on interventions or referrals that support their needs.
  • Approaching work with respectful curiosity, balancing challenge and support to help young people reach their potential and stay safe.
  • Working closely with other professionals and organisations to collectively improve outcomes.
  • Continuously evaluating the effectiveness of actions and methods.
  • Undertaking the appropriate level of training and working within safeguarding policies.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must meet the Civil Service Nationality requirements.
  • Must pass a medical and fitness assessment.
  • Must meet the required eyesight standard in both eyes (with or without corrective lenses).
  • Must meet the required standard of hearing (without the use of hearing aids).
  • Tattoos are permitted but must not be deemed offensive, discriminatory, violent, or intimidating. Facial tattoos are generally not acceptable, except for cultural, religious, or medical reasons.
  • A driving licence and own transport is beneficial but not essential unless specified.
  • Must be able to fulfil all spoken aspects of the role with confidence in English or Welsh.
  • Must undertake a Disclosure and Barring Security Check.

Salary/Compensations

  • 37 hours a week = £40,840 a year
  • 39 hours a week = £43,290 a year
  • 41 hours a week = £45,379 a year
