About the Role
Prison officers protect the public and help make an impact on prisoners' lives. In this unique career, you'll have the opportunity to carry out many different roles in any one day, working directly with prisoners in a unique environment, helping to protect the public and make a positive impact.
Responsibilities
- Protect the public and help make an impact on prisoners' lives.
- Build constructive, positive and professional relationships with prisoners.
- Support colleagues and act as one team to keep the prison safe.
- Carry out different roles in any one day, acting as a peacekeeper, counsellor, or teacher.
- Work directly with prisoners in a unique environment.
- Cover various shift patterns that will include evenings, some nights, weekends and public holidays.
Requirements
- Be at least 18 years old at the point of employment.
- Meet the Civil Service Nationality requirements.
- Pass a medical and fitness assessment.
- Meet the required eyesight standard in both eyes (with or without corrective lenses).
- Have a suitable standard of hearing (without the use of hearing aids).
- Tattoos must not be deemed as offensive, discriminatory, violent or intimidating.
- Facial tattoos are generally not acceptable, except where for cultural, religious, or medical reasons.
- To work in a high security prison (category A), must have been a resident in the UK for the last 3 years.
- Ensure you have and maintain the legal right to live and work in the Civil Service and in the United Kingdom.
- Be able to fulfil all spoken aspects of the role with confidence in English or Welsh.

- £40,876 a year (37 hours a week)
- £43,453 a year (39 hours a week)
