Prison officers protect the public and help make an impact on prisoners' lives. This fast-paced role could be the start of a successful career for individuals with integrity, skills, and strength of character. In this unique career, you’ll have the opportunity to carry out many different roles in any one day, working directly with prisoners in a unique environment.

Responsibilities

  • Protect the public and help make an impact on prisoners' lives.
  • Build constructive, positive, and professional relationships with prisoners.
  • Support colleagues and act as one team to keep the prison safe.
  • Work various shifts and some weekends.
  • Carry out different roles in any one day, acting as a peacekeeper, counsellor, or teacher.
  • Work directly with prisoners in a unique environment.
  • Undertake Counter-Terrorism Check (CTC vetting).
  • Undergo and clear pre-employment checks, including His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service Enhanced Level 2 vetting and Counter-Terrorism Check (CTC vetting).
  • Complete medical and fitness tests, including eyesight, hearing, and basic health screening.
  • Fulfill all spoken aspects of the role with confidence in English or Welsh.

Requirements

  • Be at least 18 years old at the point of employment.
  • Meet the Civil Service Nationality requirements.
  • Pass a medical and fitness assessment.
  • Meet the required eyesight standard in both eyes (with or without corrective lenses).
  • Have a suitable standard of hearing (without the use of hearing aids).
  • Tattoos must not be deemed as offensive, discriminatory, violent, or intimidating. Facial tattoos are generally not acceptable, except for cultural, religious, or medical reasons.
  • Provide proof of residency in the UK for the last 3 years to complete CTC vetting.
  • Be able to fulfill all spoken aspects of the role with confidence in English or Welsh.

  • £41,290 (for a 39 hour week inc 20% unsocial)
  • 37 hours a week = £38,840 a year

  • 41 hours a week = £43,739 a year
