About the Role

The role is to provide first-line support to a Lord or Lady Justice of Appeal or High Court Judge by ensuring the best use of the judge's time, enabling them to concentrate on the delivery of justice. This involves administrative duties such as typing documents and diary management, and liaising with internal and external stakeholders. The role may require extensive travel with overnight stays during the week for considerable periods. Full training will be provided.

Responsibilities

  • Keep an up-to-date diary of your Judge’s court sittings/visits/meetings.
  • Maintenance of the judge’s robes and library.
  • Coordinating visits and assisting visitors.
  • Performing other office functions as required.
  • Undertake domestic duties as required by the judge, such as tea/coffee preparation, lunch collection, washing up, and dry cleaning.
  • Transport large court bundles around the building; some lifting will be required.
  • When judges go on circuit, clerks are responsible for transporting books, bundles, files, computers, robes, and other judicial requirements, as well as their own and the judge’s personal belongings.
  • Ensure the smooth running of the judge’s court commitments whether in London or on circuit.
  • Communicate by telephone, email, and correspondence to ensure the resolution of varied queries and requests.
  • Liaise with judges and senior figures, litigants and members of the public, jurors, court and tribunal users, and representatives of other agencies and organisations.
  • Represent the assigned judge at an operational level.
  • Efficiently manage all aspects of the judge’s day using organizational skills.
  • Make decisions regarding changing priorities as they occur, without reference to the judge.
  • Work on your own initiative.
  • Act as the first point of contact between the judge and others, maintaining confidentiality, tact, courtesy, and diplomacy.
  • Manage the judge’s other commitments while on circuit.
  • Liaise with the housekeeper and lodgings manager on domestic matters that may include arrangement of dinner parties and visits while on circuit.

Requirements

  • Accurate typing speed of a minimum of 35 wpm (tested in three parts: copying from typed text with corrections, copying from manuscript with corrections, and drafting emails on behalf of judges).
  • Previous experience of using IT Microsoft Office applications.
  • A high standard of spoken and written English, including the ability to understand, assimilate, and accurately summarize information in a clear and concise written format.
  • Must be able to attend assessment days and interviews in person.
  • Must confirm employment and residence history for at least 3 years prior to the date of application for pre-employment checks (BPSS).
  • Must be able to successfully complete National Security Vetting at Counter Terrorism Check (CTC) level.
  • Must have been resident in the UK for at least 3 years prior to the date of application to meet CTC requirements.
  • Must have the legal right to live and work in the Civil Service and in the United Kingdom.
  • Must not be eligible for new Skilled Worker visas unless a Skilled Worker visa was held prior to July 22, 2025.
