About the Role
As a Senior Software Engineer for the API Platform, you will be a key hands-on contributor, designing, building, and maintaining core platform capabilities. You will work closely with Staff Engineers and engineering leaders to turn the platform's technical vision into reliable, well-crafted software, while helping partner teams across CVS Health adopt and succeed with the platform. This role requires an experienced engineer who can take ownership of complex features from design through production, work through ambiguity with support from technical leaders, and raise the bar for quality on the team.
Responsibilities
- Own the design and implementation of significant platform features and services.
- Contribute to architectural discussions and help evaluate trade-offs between short-term needs and long-term maintainability.
- Follow and help refine the technical standards and best practices used by the team.
- Proactively identify risks, bugs, and areas for improvement within your areas of ownership.
- Write high-quality, well-tested, maintainable code.
- Review code thoughtfully, with attention to correctness, performance, and readability.
- Participate in on-call rotations, debugging, and resolving production issues.
- Identify and address technical debt within the systems you work on.
- Mentor less experienced engineers through code reviews, pairing, and technical guidance.
- Share knowledge with teammates and help onboard new engineers.
- Participate in interviewing and hiring.
- Partner with engineers on other teams to understand their needs and help them integrate with the API Platform.
- Communicate clearly about progress, blockers, and technical decisions.
- Write and maintain documentation so knowledge is shared rather than siloed.
- Contribute constructively to technical discussions and help the team reach decisions.
- Stay current with industry trends and bring useful ideas to the team.
- Contribute to proof-of-concepts for new technologies and approaches.
- Evaluate tools and techniques based on their practical fit for our platform.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience in web development
- Strong proficiency in JavaScript and TypeScript
- Experience with modern front-end frameworks (React and Next.js preferred)
- Experience with Java and Spring Boot
- Experience owning features or components from design through production
- Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to teammates and partners
- Experience mentoring or supporting the growth of other engineers
- Experience working on production systems with real-world scale and reliability needs
- 2+ years of experience in API development
- Experience with front-end architecture and design systems
- Experience building developer tools, libraries, or platforms
- Knowledge of modern web performance optimization techniques
- Experience with Node.js and server-side JavaScript
- Understanding of API design and GraphQL
- Experience with DevOps tools, processes, and culture
- Experience contributing to inclusive engineering practices
