About the Role
The Phlebotomist at United Health Services (UHS) Chenango Memorial Hospital (CMH) is crucial for delivering safe, accurate, and timely patient care through specimen collection. This role involves interacting with patients, maintaining specimen integrity, and supporting laboratory operations to ensure reliable test results for diagnosis and treatment.
Responsibilities
- Perform phlebotomy and specimen collection for inpatient, outpatient, and off-site patients, including venipuncture, capillary collection, urine collections, breath testing, and glucose tolerance testing.
- Verify patient identity, test orders, and collection requirements before each draw.
- Select appropriate collection equipment and assess patient-specific factors to ensure safe and high-quality specimen collection.
- Enter and verify laboratory test orders in the EHR, confirm diagnosis and authorization documentation, and resolve requisition discrepancies.
- Prioritize STAT, timed, and routine draws and organize workload across various assignments.
- Process, label, store, and transport specimens according to established procedures.
- Assist with outpatient reception, answering phones, coordinating patient flow, and maintaining supply stock.
- Contribute to patient care and laboratory quality by obtaining accurate specimens.
- Exercise judgment to identify collection issues, patient reactions, or specimen concerns and escalate them promptly.
- Work under general supervision while maintaining accountability for collections, documentation, and specimen handling.
- Build positive patient interactions by explaining procedures and reducing anxiety.
- Assist with downtime workflows, system recovery, and training new team members.
- Support operational needs through occasional travel between organizational locations and, when required, operation of a system-owned vehicle.
- Follow established policies for patient identification, specimen labeling, infection prevention, sharps safety, biohazard disposal, PPE use, and standard precautions.
- Maintain accurate, complete, and timely documentation in the EHR and related systems.
- Complete required orientation, annual education, competency validation, and department training.
- Protect patient privacy and confidentiality in all communications and work activities.
- Perform assigned duties during scheduled system downtimes and recovery periods.
- Adhere to current department on-call policy requirements.
- Safeguard sensitive data by following established security policies and procedures.
- Support cybersecurity and data protection requirements by coordinating vendor risk assessments and monitoring third-party compliance.
- Contribute to a team-oriented environment that supports shared success and continuous improvement.

Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Driver License
- Up to 1 year of direct experience performing the exact or very similar duties required by the job within the same role or function
- Up to 1 year of experience in the same work environment or setting (hospital, practice, department/division)
- Up to 1 year of technical/systems experience using specialized tools, software, or equipment required for the role
