About the Role
This commercially focused Legal Counsel role supports MUFG Corporate Markets across the UK and EMEA, handling commercial contracts, regulatory matters, and day-to-day legal issues to support client delivery and business growth. The role suits a pragmatic lawyer with a solutions-focused approach, offering opportunities to build experience in transactions, cross-border matters, and process improvement.
Responsibilities
- Draft, review, and negotiate commercial contracts with corporate clients and vendors.
- Manage negotiations independently via calls and written communication with clients and their legal advisors.
- Advise business leaders on legal risks and issues, providing clear recommendations and commercially workable outcomes.
- Provide practical legal advice on disputes and operational legal issues.
- Offer pragmatic legal advice regarding share registration and employee share plan administration, including FCA rules.
- Collaborate with commercial, operational, risk, and compliance stakeholders to develop protective business solutions.
- Support cross-border matters involving overseas clients and service arrangements.
- Coordinate local-law advice, legal opinions, and external counsel across relevant jurisdictions.
- Take ownership of matters, identify priorities, and progress work with appropriate independence.
- Escalate material legal, operational, or commercial risks as necessary.
- Build trusted relationships across the business and provide training to business units.
- Demonstrate curiosity and a willingness to develop expertise in unfamiliar areas.
- Create and improve legal processes, including maintaining templates and using legal technology tools.
- Contribute to practical improvements in legal support delivery across Corporate Markets.
Requirements
- Qualified solicitor in England and Wales.
- 4+ years of post-qualification experience in private practice, in-house, or a combination.
- Strong corporate and commercial contract drafting and negotiation experience.
- Demonstrated experience with and knowledge of UK and EU data protection laws.
- Experience providing practical advice on disputes or operational legal issues.
- An interest in legal operations, knowledge management, and the effective use of technology.
- A commercial and pragmatic outlook with a solutions-focused approach.
- Ability to identify key legal issues and communicate a clear recommended position.
- Confidence to deal directly with clients, external lawyers, and senior internal stakeholders.
- Collaborative working style combined with the confidence and judgment to progress matters independently.
- Ability to manage multiple wide-ranging matters, competing priorities, and short deadlines calmly and accurately.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to adapt style to different audiences.
- Ability to deliver clear legal advice and training.
- Sound judgment regarding when to resolve issues independently and when to escalate or seek specialist external advice.
