About the Role
Mount Sinai Health System is seeking a Specialty Laboratory Technologist (Histocompatibility) to join our Histocompatibility and Immunology Laboratory (HLA Lab). This role is crucial in supporting Solid Organ and Bone Marrow Transplant Programs by performing serological and molecular HLA testing to ensure optimal donor-recipient matching. The ideal candidate is a highly skilled laboratory professional with a strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and commitment to regulatory compliance. This position offers the opportunity to work in a fast-paced, high-volume laboratory that directly impacts patient outcomes.
Responsibilities
- Demonstrates the ability to perform clinical/technical/service/administrative tasks.
- Performs technical procedures in Immunogenetics as outlined in the policy and procedure manual(s).
- Performs periodic/scheduled and as needed maintenance on instrumentation/equipment, maintaining documentation including remedial action for problems encountered.
- Performs quality control and calibration procedures when indicated, verifies in laboratory information system, and records on Levy-Jennings charts.
- Ensures all required Quality Control and/or calibration procedures are completed by signing out records appropriately.
- Maintains all records as per regulatory requirements: card files, patient requisitions, LIS Documentation, statistical data.
- Consults with the Supervisor or the Pathologist on all important results, conflicting or out of range results, and notes inadequate volume and/or abnormal appearance of sample.
- Reviews all Critical Test results by repeat analysis if necessary, and communicates the same to Nursing Staff/Physician, notifying Supervisor/Pathologist in extreme cases.
- Prioritizes work activities to meet established/expected test result turnaround time and notifies Supervisor if unable to perform a test or if it is delayed.
- Assists in Inventory Control to assure adequate supplies are available and reagents are stored properly.
- Participates in other projects/duties as assigned by the Supervisor/Lab Management.
- Takes initiative in resolving instrument related problems and finding alternate options for test processing.
- Uses available time to departmental advantage and assists where needed.
- Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care, based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in assigned area.
- May be required to perform other duties as assigned or perform other duties when necessary.
- Participates in the departments performance improvement activities.
- Maintains patient/employee confidentiality in the management of information.
- Observes the Health Care Systems compliance policies.
- Participates in Competency and Proficiency testing programs, reports results back to Supervisor.
- Observes all Safety procedures and precautions, including using Personal Protective Equipment and disposing of contaminated waste and samples as specified.
- Wears hospital ID badge at all times while on premises.
- Perform serological and molecular HLA testing to support solid organ and bone marrow transplantation.
- Conduct tests such as HLA typing (based NGS/RT-PCR), crossmatching, antibody screening, and flow cytometry-based assays.
- Work closely with transplant coordinators, clinicians, and other healthcare professionals to facilitate timely and accurate test reporting.
- Notify the supervisor or clinician of any critical, out-of-range, or conflicting test results.
- Ensure proper storage of temperature-sensitive materials, routinely checking laboratory equipment.
- Adhere to safety protocols for handling biohazardous samples and chemicals.
- Participate in test validation, laboratory research, and development of new testing methodologies.
- Stay current with advancements in histocompatibility testing through continuing education and professional development.
- Contribute to quality improvement projects that enhance lab performance and efficiency.
- Assist in the training and mentorship of new technologists and laboratory personnel.
- Engage in proficiency testing programs to ensure competency and skill enhancement.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Biology, or a related field, meeting NYS Department of Health (DOH) technologist standards.
- 0–1 year of experience in a clinical laboratory setting, preferably in Histocompatibility, Immunology, or Transplantation Laboratory.
- New York State Clinical Laboratory Technologist License (issued by DOH/Office of Professions) or Restricted Technologist License in Histocompatibility required.
- Moderate physical activity including standing, bending, lifting (up to 15 lbs.), and typing.
- Exposure to infectious and hazardous materials, including blood, tissues, and chemicals.
- Ability to handle human tissue samples (e.g., spleen, lymph nodes, blood).
- Must comply with biohazard safety protocols and wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
- Availability to work on-call hours and flexible shifts as needed by the department.
- Compliance with hospital policies, regulatory requirements, and laboratory best practices.
