Responsibilities

  • Scrub for surgical cases, handling instruments, supplies, medication, media, and specimens.
  • Manage the surgical field efficiently to minimize waste of supplies and equipment.
  • Maintain supplies and equipment in assigned specialties.
  • Demonstrate skills in scrubbing for all surgical specialties.
  • Assist in solving immediate patient care problems within the scope of ORT practice.
  • Select appropriate equipment and supplies for cases.
  • Handle instrumentation safely with attention to counts and personal safety.
  • Adhere to standards of practice for patient safety.
  • Assist with inventory maintenance for assigned specialties.
  • Use supplies and institutional resources in a financially responsible manner.
  • Differentiate and care for sterilization methods for specific instruments and equipment.
  • Identify budget/replacement needs of surgical specialty supplies and equipment.
  • Participate in product, supply, and instrument evaluation with cost and quality considerations.
  • Maintain an orderly, clean, and safe work environment and personal appearance.
  • Demonstrate knowledge through use of equipment and supplies for surgical procedures.
  • Function within legal and policy limits of individual responsibility.
  • Assist in the training process of students or orientation of new personnel.
  • Assume call duties as scheduled.
  • Participate in staffing patterns that reflect variable demands in service.
  • Exhibit knowledge of skills, importance of teamwork, and consideration of others.
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude, flexibility, and innovation while problem-solving.
  • Collaborate with all members of the healthcare team.
  • Participate in departmental/organizational committees as assigned.
  • Demonstrate initiative in expanding and sharing knowledge.
  • Participate in continued education through attendance and presentations at in-service sessions.
  • Support and respect each team member, recognizing the requirements of the circulator role.
  • Communicate with patients and coworkers using means to protect patient privacy and maintain confidentiality.
  • Adhere to hospital policies with attention to patient rights and confidentiality.
  • Communicate necessary information to supervisor or team leader.
  • Perform similar or related duties as requested or directed.
  • Perform other duties as requested and observed by supervisor or manager.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Successful completion of a nationally accredited education program for surgical technologists and holds and maintains a certified surgical technologist credential, OR
  • Completion of an appropriate training program for surgical technology in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, OR
  • Evidence of employment as a surgical technologist in a healthcare facility for a cumulative period of one year between 2011 and 2015, OR
  • In the service of the federal government, performing duties related to a Surgical technologist.
  • Received education in an accredited program for licensed practical nursing, required.
  • Experience as a surgical technologist, preferred.
  • Must obtain Surgical Technologist certification within 1 year from date of graduation and date of hire, OR Licensed by New York State as an LPN.
  • Must obtain BLS certification within 6 months from date of hire, required.
