About the Role
Reporting to the Senior Manager, Investment Accounting and Reporting, this role is responsible for the General Ledger and performing accounting and reporting functions for all investments of HOOPP (except Real Estate, Private Equities, and Infrastructure). The role requires applying Canadian GAAP and IFRS technical knowledge and analytical skills to ensure the completeness and accuracy of financial records for all investments. The incumbent is expected to build strong working relationships with other departments within Finance and other Divisions such as Investment Management, Risk and Information Technology.
Responsibilities
- Perform month-end reconciliations to comply with reporting timelines.
- Analyze financial results to assess reasonability and fluctuations of HOOPP’s investments and income.
- Recommend corrections to investment transactions to ensure accurate information in the investment accounting system.
- Collaborate with the Business Process team on the impact of new investments or strategies and their operational impacts.
- Participate in departmental and divisional initiatives and projects impacting Investment Accounting and Reporting.
- Prepare manual journal entries to the General Ledger with appropriate analysis and supporting documentation.
- Prepare detailed month-end and year-end working papers for financial reporting and audit purposes.
- Assist in interim and year-end audits by providing requested information and responding to auditor questions.
- Assist with the preparation of complex financial statements disclosure notes related to investments.
- Collaborate with the Business Process team on process improvement opportunities.
- Lead early stages of initiatives by identifying, assessing, and proposing improvements, automation, or enhanced controls.
- Maintain and update internal Finance investment accounting policies and ICFR narratives.
- Collaborate on the review and update of accounting treatment papers and operating procedures.
- Actively participate in HOOPP’s ICFR program by assisting in the identification and documentation of risks and controls.
- Assess accounting, reporting, control, and system implications of complex or non-standard investment transactions.
- Investigate and resolve ad hoc issues, proactively communicating with other teams as a subject matter expert.
Requirements
- University degree in Business or related discipline
- Successful completion of an accounting designation (CPA)
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in accounting for the financial services sector
- Proven experience working on large cross-functional projects and/or teams
- Knowledge of accounting standards & principles (GAAP and IFRS)
- Working knowledge of accounting principles for derivative instruments and marketable securities
- Exceptional problem-solving and analytical skills, with demonstrated sense of judgement and experience
- Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and completeness
- Ability to handle multiple tasks efficiently
- Highly results oriented, with a proven ability to meet tight deadlines and manage conflicting priorities
