About the Role
The Atlantic is seeking an ambitious reporter to cover the intersection of technology and consumer culture, focusing on consumer spending habits. The role involves producing engaging stories across e-commerce, retail, the influencer economy, marketing, and travel, requiring the ability to interrogate companies, analyze trends, and report on logistics. This position is for someone with original ideas, who can work quickly and deeply, and write clearly and stylishly under deadline pressure. Occasional night, early-morning, and weekend work is expected.
Responsibilities
- Produce engaging stories across a wide-ranging beat including e-commerce, retail, the influencer economy, marketing, and travel.
- Interrogate companies and platforms shaping online shopping.
- Analyze the meaning of trendy products and status symbols.
- Dig into the logistics of product delivery.
- Move fast when a story breaks and go deep when the moment calls for it.
- Write clearly and stylishly on a deadline.
- At times include night, early-morning, and weekend work.
Requirements
- Substantial experience as a reporter for general-interest publications.
- Deep interest in consumerism and an understanding of how to translate compelling ideas into deftly reported and beautifully written stories.
- High standards for quality and accuracy.
- Facility with the ethics and rigors of journalism.
- Deep familiarity with The Atlantic.
- A great eye for spotting trends and a healthy skepticism about them.
- Ability to work quickly, meet deadlines, and switch gears as needed.
- Interest in and openness to a wide variety of views and perspectives.
- Desire to write frequently, with authority and humor.
- Successful completion of reference checks.
- Compliance with The Atlantic's COVID-19 vaccination policy.
