About the Role

Asian Law Caucus (ALC) seeks a Cantonese-speaking Community Advocate for its Housing Rights Program. This role is integral to the Housing Rights team, which focuses on housing defense and anti-displacement through holistic legal services and education for low-income and immigrant tenants. The advocate will support clients through various advocacy phases, integrate direct services with impact strategies, and participate in community coalitions and outreach.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct intakes and interviews with clients, particularly those requiring in-language services, and assist with case development and fact-gathering.
  • Collaborate with attorneys, community advocates, paralegals, and other staff to achieve client and organizational advocacy goals.
  • Provide administrative support with client data and documents.
  • Offer advocacy support at meetings with clients and groups, especially those needing in-language services.
  • Provide logistical support to clients to ensure attendance at necessary appointments or appearances.
  • Under attorney supervision, provide legal advice and brief services at legal clinics.
  • Accompany clients to meetings, interviews, and other necessary appointments or appearances, onsite or virtually.
  • Support and assist clients in exercising their rights and accessing needed resources.
  • Serve as an in-language point of contact and maintain accessible Chinese-language contact services for Housing Rights clients.
  • Provide interpretation and translation for clients and ALC staff as needed.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with community members and partners to support clients and advocacy goals.
  • Collaborate with allies and organizations in joint community efforts and initiatives.
  • Conduct community outreach about tenant rights and develop related educational materials.

Requirements

  • Fluency in Cantonese.
  • Ability to read and write proficiently in Chinese.
  • Bachelor’s degree, or a combination of equivalent education and work experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing the rights of low-income, people of color, immigrant, tenant, or worker communities.
  • Excellent research, analytical, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to think creatively, be strategic, and exercise good judgment.
  • Ability to work well with diverse groups and individuals.
  • Ability to work well under time pressure.
  • Ability to work some weekends and evenings.
  • Proficient with Google and Microsoft Suite.

Salary/Compensations

  • $72,100 - $94,074
  • $1,500 language premium for oral proficiency
  • $1,500 language premium for written proficiency
