About the Role
The Dispatcher performs specialized work in receiving emergency calls for service and dispatching police, fire, and EMS. This role requires quick, efficient, calm, and accurate processing of emergency calls and coordination of emergency responder resources using technical computer-aided dispatch systems and multi-channel radio/paging consoles.
Responsibilities
- Receive emergency calls for service.
- Dispatch appropriate police, fire, and EMS personnel.
- Utilize computer-aided dispatch systems (CAD).
- Operate multi-channel radio/paging consoles.
- Process incoming emergency calls accurately and efficiently.
- Coordinate emergency responder resources.
- Observe all local, state, and federal laws and established policies.
- Guide and train temporary and/or regular employees.
- Troubleshoot problems and issues.
- Instruct others in work methods and procedures.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or G.E.D.
- 3 or more years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Regular and reliable attendance.
- Valid Driver’s License.
- Ability to speak clearly and concisely over the radio and telephone.
- Ability to deal courteously, tactfully, and professionally with the public.
- Ability to take and transmit clear and complete direction and information.
- Ability to analyze situations quickly and make sound decisions in emergency and routine situations.
- Knowledge of county geography/ability to use maps.
- Knowledge of recordkeeping principles.
- Proficiency in efficient keyboarding.
- Proficiency with computers and related software applications.
- Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing sufficient to exchange or convey information and to provide and receive work direction.
- Acute hearing and vision.
- Memory recall.
- Manual dexterity.
- Ability to distinguish colors used on maps and consoles.
- Clear articulate speech.
- Ability to perform frequent turning/twisting, reaching, grasping and pinching.
- Ability to operate 911 systems, 2-way radio, head sets, telephones, copy and fax machines.
- Ability to make decisions quickly with little margin of error.
- Ability to operate multiple computer terminals simultaneously.
- Ability to function in a stressful environment.
- Ability to work shifts that may include nights, weekends and holidays.
- Ability to conduct oneself with a high degree of professionalism.
- Ability to handle frequent contact with individuals who are distraught, angry and sometimes disrespectful.
- Ability to handle traumatic and disturbing call content.
- Access to Not Public Data should be strictly limited to necessary job duties.
- Take reasonable measures to ensure Not Public Data is not accessed by unauthorized individuals.
- Properly store Not Public Data according to Mower County employee policies and Minnesota or federal law.
- Comply with the County’s Data Practices and Data Security Policies.
