About the Role
The New York Times is seeking an experienced editor to guide the editorial selection, writing, and structure of "The Interview" video series. This role requires a curious, creative, and rigorous journalist who is adept at understanding current events and culture, skilled in writing for video, and experienced in working with hosts to bring out their best work. You will report to the Executive Producer and thrive in a collaborative, deadline-driven environment.
Responsibilities
- Edit episodes, with attention to pacing, framing, clarity, tone, structure, and visual continuity and storytelling.
- Give final sign-off on episodes and social clips.
- Collaborate with the executive producer and hosts on setting editorial agenda and guest selection.
- Guide the prep process with producers to ensure episodes have clarity of thought, logical sequencing of ideas, and are structured for maximum impact.
- Guide a host during an interview, especially when unexpected situations arise.
- Set production schedules and drive production for a small team managing multiple episodes concurrently.
- Communicate notes and feedback to hosts and producers clearly, directly, quickly, and compassionately.
- Work closely with producers to help them perform their best work under deadline pressure.
- Anticipate and proactively solve challenges within episodes.
- Respond to breaking news moments with urgency while maintaining the show's longform, in-depth, conversational identity.
- Exercise calm under pressure and motivate the team.
- Act as a partner to the executive producer.
- Provide input into staffing decisions, assess performance, and offer feedback to staff.
- Welcome feedback, incorporate editorial notes quickly, work cooperatively, and develop creative solutions for disagreements.
- Employ editorial judgment reflective of The Times' mission of independent journalism.
- Demonstrate support and understanding of journalistic independence and a commitment to the mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
Requirements
- At least 7 years of experience in audio or video production, including several years as an editor.
- Highly skilled in all aspects of editing.
- Experience working with and coaching hosts.
- Experience overseeing soup-to-nuts audio or video production.
- Experience navigating a newsroom environment with solid news judgment.
- Proven ability to foster an inclusive, motivating, and innovative environment.
- Collaborative spirit is a must.
- Belief in The New York Times' mission of independence and dedication to innovation and growth.
- Ability to uphold the editorial standards of The Times.
