About the Role

Notion is building the operating system for knowledge work, enabling substantive knowledge work from mobile devices. This role focuses on enhancing the native Android app experience, ensuring it is fast, smooth, and reliable, even with poor connectivity. You will contribute to the native foundation for reading, writing, and editing, impacting core features like Home, Search, and Inbox, and work with shared frameworks, Rust, and AI tools.

Responsibilities

  • Ship the core Notion experience on Android, building and polishing surfaces like page opening, reading, writing, editing, and navigation.
  • Develop on a native Kotlin and Jetpack Compose stack that is fast, smooth, and dependable offline.
  • Partner with product managers and designers to translate ideas into shipped features and iterate based on feedback and data.
  • Utilize AI coding tools and agents for faster building, testing, and investigation, while maintaining accountability for quality.
  • Own a core product area (e.g., Home, Inbox, editor) from idea to launch within the first year.
  • Identify and resolve issues related to startup time, scrolling, typing latency, crashes, and memory usage.
  • Implement tests and monitoring to prevent regressions.
  • Contribute to the native foundation for how pages render, how users write and edit, and the navigation and app chrome.
  • Work across the Android stack, with opportunities to engage with the Rust layer and AI tools for mobile development.
  • Collaborate with experienced product and mobile AI engineers to identify team slowdowns, explore new Android capabilities, and influence feature shipping.

Requirements

  • Solid Android fundamentals with experience building and shipping Android apps.
  • Comfort with modern Android development: Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, Coroutines/Flow, and Gradle.
  • Experience with a large, modular codebase is a plus.
  • Enjoyment in making UI feel fast and smooth, with curiosity about custom text rendering, complex lazy lists, or rich-text editing.
  • Experience with performance profiling, realtime collaboration, or offline sync is a plus.
  • Care for how the app feels to use, not just how it works, with attention to interaction details and polish.
  • Ability to use feedback and data to guide development decisions.
  • Skill in building a clear picture of a problem before fixing it.
  • Ability to explain trade-offs in writing.
  • Proactive in seeking help when stuck.
  • Experience moving a hybrid or web-based surface to native, or building something from 0→1, is a plus.
  • Proficiency in using AI tools and agents as collaborators, including framing tasks, reviewing changes, testing behavior, and designing workflows.
  • Web experience (TypeScript, React, Node) is welcome but not required.
  • Intellectual curiosity, a drive for tinkering and discovery, and excitement to use AI as a collaborator.
  • Ability to think better and make work easier for others to build upon using AI.
