About the Role
The VP of Engineering will lead Brodie's entire technology group, owning how technology is built and runs, and shaping future development. This role is crucial for enhancing athlete experience and scaling operations, ensuring the product is fast, reliable, and secure for a growing user base.
Responsibilities
- Run a full assessment of Brodie's technology in the first 90 days, including infrastructure, codebase, architecture, data, security, and AI infrastructure.
- Map tech debt, single points of failure, and scaling risks, ranking them by impact on athletes and the business.
- Develop a 12-month technology roadmap outlining what to keep, fix, rebuild, buy, or retire.
- Own security end-to-end, including access control, secrets management, vendor risk, incident response, and protection of athlete data.
- Set Brodie's AI infrastructure strategy, evaluating models, platforms, vendors, costs, and safe deployment of AI features.
- Manage the technology budget, including cloud spend, software/vendor contracts, and headcount.
- Write production code, review pull requests, and pair with engineers on complex problems.
- Make final decisions on architecture and major technical choices, documenting the reasoning.
- Set engineering standards for code review, testing, CI/CD, observability, documentation, and release management.
- Own reliability and performance, especially during peak periods.
- Establish an on-call and incident process to proactively address issues.
- Integrate AI-assisted development into daily team workflows.
- Partner with the CEO and leadership on the product roadmap, making scope, effort, trade-off, sequencing, and risk decisions.
- Run a product development process for fast-cycle feature delivery aligned with the league calendar.
- Scale engagement and retention features for the Brodie app in collaboration with Growth and lifecycle/CRM teams.
- Ensure all releases are measurable through product analytics, experimentation, and dashboards.
- Audit existing tools and platforms across departments to identify inefficiencies and consolidate the tech stack.
- Build internal tools and automation to support scaling operations across multiple markets.
- Own the data foundation, ensuring connected and trustworthy data for all teams.
- Implement AI and automation for the broader company to streamline repetitive workflows.
- Lead engineering, product, and design as a unified group with clear goals and operating rhythm.
- Hire, coach, and grow the team, setting hiring standards, career paths, and performance expectations.
- Determine the optimal mix of in-house engineers, contractors, and agencies, holding external partners to high standards.
- Represent technology on the leadership team, communicating technical trade-offs clearly.
- Report on delivery, reliability, security, and spend with strategic insights.
- Collaborate with the Product Design Director to maintain high standards for design quality and accessibility.
Requirements
- 10+ years in software engineering, with 5+ years building and leading engineering teams.
- Proven experience inheriting, assessing, and modernizing existing platforms without business disruption.
- Hands-on coding ability across mobile, backend services, APIs, and cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP).
- Demonstrated security leadership, including application and cloud security, access management, and customer data protection.
- Working knowledge of Canadian and US privacy requirements.
- Hands-on experience shipping LLM-powered features or AI tooling in production.
- Ability to evaluate AI models and vendors on quality, cost, and risk.
- Strong product judgment and experience partnering with or leading product management.
- Track record of building and scaling teams, including hiring, coaching, and managing engineers.
- Proven ability to increase team velocity, evidenced by shorter release cycles, fewer incidents, and reduced manual work.
- Experience building process and structure in fast-scaling companies without hindering growth.
- Excellent communication skills, able to explain technical trade-offs to non-technical leaders and write effectively.
- AI-Native Mindset: Actively uses AI tools (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot) to accelerate development, code review, testing, documentation, and operations.
- Commitment to automating repetitive work and increasing speed without compromising quality.
- Must be able to work 5 days a week in the Toronto HQ.
