About the Role
This proven strategic leader will bridge vision and execution by translating bold ideas into actionable strategies that strengthen FSL programs, networks, partnerships and funding models. The CSO is responsible for shaping and driving FSL’s short and long-term strategy to expand its impact and successfully deliver on its mission. The CSO leads agency-wide strategic planning, business development, and alignment across the organization and affiliates.
Responsibilities
- Lead the development and execution of multi-year strategic plans focused on growth and excellence
- Identify opportunities to expand FSL’s impact, including geographic expansion, program expansion and increased service impact
- Monitor and apply emerging trends in mental health, substance use treatment, housing and homelessness, early intervention, community services and senior services to inform strategy
- Develop sustainable funding and business models and other strategies to ensure long-term sustainability
- Guide long-term visioning that ensures FSL remains a non-profit leader in the community
- Identify and cultivate strategic partnerships across government, philanthropy and the private sector
- Align with marketing, communications and PR efforts to increase recognition and engagement
- Inform strategy for the development of new funding streams, including major initiatives and capital campaigns
- Lead strategy for government relations and advocacy to advance policies aligned with program area priorities and government investment
- Facilitate the development, drafting and submission of proposals for grants of all sizes, private and public and oversee grants management staff and contractors
- Lead organizational change initiatives tied to growth, innovation, and evolving service models
- Foster a culture of learning, experimentation, and continuous improvement
- Promote shared ownership and collaboration across teams
- Help staff and stakeholders co-create the future through inclusive and participatory approaches
- Balance external opportunity-seeking with a deep understanding of internal capacity and operations
- Support the CEO and leadership team in prioritizing and sequencing major strategic initiatives
Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree in related field required, master’s degree preferred.
- 5 to 10 years of progressive leadership experience in strategy, social impact, nonprofit management or related fields
- Seasoned nonprofit or social sector leader with strong big-picture thinking, people skills, project management and deep market knowledge
- Successful experience in business development, strategic planning and/or grants management
- Proven ability to build compelling strategies that align organizations around shared goals, and to drive execution and change at scale in government-funded or multi-stakeholder organizations
- Energized by complexity and skilled at navigating diverse stakeholders
- Ability to lead and influence through credibility, empathy and results, and to build relationships that mobilize funders, partners and teams
- Excellent writing and communication skills, with the ability to articulate a compelling vision and inspire staff, stakeholders, funders and partners
- This position requires sitting and working at a computer for extended periods of time, as well as traveling to different FSL offices and external meetings throughout Suffolk County.
