About the Role

As the Director I, AP US History, you will be responsible for preserving and improving the quality and validity of the AP Program’s core deliverables: the exam, the course curriculum, and professional development content. You will manage item development from authoring to administration, train and collaborate with subject-matter experts, and ethically integrate AI technologies in assessment creation and review. This role serves as a point of contact for committees and communities of subject-matter experts, driving the curriculum and assessment for AP US History and its global growth.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as an assessment leader for AP US History, with primary responsibility for assessment development.
  • Independently lead processes for authoring and revising assessment content, including training educator constituents and leveraging generative AI.
  • Independently lead the development and management of assessment content and scoring materials for AP US History through iterative review stages.
  • Independently lead the development of assessment forms for AP US History, ensuring alignment with approved curricula and test specifications.
  • Lead multiple face-to-face, weekend, and virtual meetings annually with the AP US History Test Development Committee.
  • Train and directly supervise Test Development Committee members in AP US History.
  • Recruit educators for the AP US History Development Committee and other opportunities.
  • Lead the successful scoring of student responses for AP US History Exams at the annual scoring event.
  • Produce AP Reading publications materials for teacher and student use.
  • Contribute to current research and best practices in assessment.
  • Engage regularly with AP Curriculum & Assessment colleagues to align on standards and shared principles.
  • Support assessment workstreams within the AP History and Social Science Department.
  • Contribute to processes for efficient, high-quality assessment development.
  • Contribute to initiatives to refine and improve question task models as well as exam design.
  • Monitor exam validity, security, reliability, fairness, and quality, as well as reader reliability.
  • Collaborate with psychometrics and AP Curriculum & Assessment staff to establish fair, reliable, and valid cut scores.
  • Refine and improve AP US History Course Framework to ensure clear and explicit learning outcomes.
  • Collaborate with AP teams to support the development of new products for AP US History.
  • Serve as a recognized and trusted resource within the educator community.
  • Collaborate with the AP Professional learning team to support AP US History consultants and teachers.
  • Work with the AP Higher Education team to co-develop and implement plans to raise college and university awareness of AP US History courses and exams.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in US History or a directly related discipline, and knowledge of current trends in the discipline.
  • Expertise in US History with at least 5 years of experience in standardized assessment development or related work.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Solid technical proficiency and a customer-focused mindset.
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and maintain close attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to implement processes and procedures, manage project plans and schedules, and maintain tracking documentation.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across all levels.
  • Ability to travel 6-8 times per year, plus up to two additional weeks for the AP Reading.
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States.
