About the Role
The Vehicle Driver I operates and maintains motor vehicles, transporting cargo and passengers. This role is crucial for meal delivery, ensuring proper meal service and sanitation for residents. The position offers a career filled with purpose in an environment that values and respects those served.
Responsibilities
- Operates and maintains motor vehicles on location.
- Transports cargo and passengers on short and long-distance trips.
- Delivers meal carts to units/homes promptly and in a sanitary manner.
- Assumes duties of a food service worker when short staffed or assigned.
- Prepares and maintains forms or records pertaining to vehicle operations.
- Ensures vehicles are scheduled for general maintenance.
- Operates motor vehicles such as vans, trucks, and trailers.
- Transports passengers, cargo, and food carts.
- Performs physical tasks including standing for long periods, carrying, pushing, and lifting items over 45 lbs.
- Drives a state vehicle with a delivery trailer attached.
- Delivers food, supplemental formulas, and beverages to dormitories/homes/units on a predetermined schedule or as needed.
- Picks up carts after each meal to meet consumer nutritional needs.
- Manages time and follows scheduled routes.
- Stores and makes frozen food breakouts to meet weekly food item requirements for the menu.
- Stores food items in freezers and chill boxes using proper rotation procedures.
- Performs food breakout ensuring proper thawing.
- Restocks dining rooms with cleaning materials, utensils, and other supplies.
- Checks vehicle and trailer at the beginning of the work shift for proper operation and cleanliness.
- Reports major problems to the supervisor to ensure delivery capabilities.
- Prepares and maintains records and logs related to vehicle operations and breakouts.
- Performs basic vehicle maintenance, makes minor repairs, and fuels vehicles.
- Accomplishes daily operator maintenance before, during, and after each trip.
- Ensures vehicle cargo/food cart capacity is not exceeded.
- Ensures driver and passengers use safety restraints.
- Ensures cargo/food carts are distributed to reduce maximum axle loading.
- Secures and protects cargo/food carts.
- Complies with state and local traffic laws.
- Assists in the safe loading and unloading of passengers, cargo/food carts.
- Operates vehicle power lift gates, manual hydraulic forklifts, and dollies.
- Assists in performing warehouse and food server work.
- Performs general cooking, food handling, and serving techniques.
- Uses chemicals and commercial detergent for dishwashers, floors, etc., relating to food services/housekeeping operations.
- Performs basic math calculations related to this work.
- Actively participates and/or serves in a supporting role to meet agency obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation.
- May require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location for disaster response or COOP activation.
Requirements
- Must possess a valid Texas driver’s license or obtain it no later than 90 days after the hire date.
- Applicants with an out-of-state driver’s license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure.
- Eligible driving record required based on HHSC Fleet Management policy.
- Completion of Defensive Driving class is required.
- Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks.
- Males between the ages of 18 – 25 must be registered with the Selective Service.
- All State Supported Living Center Employees are subject to Random Drug Testing.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Applicants selected for hire may be required to pass background and other due diligence checks.
- Must bring I-9 documentation on the first day of work.

Experience Level
- Prior work experience operating a motor vehicle with multiple passengers and transporting cargo is required, six (6) months is preferred.
- Experience in driving a light and/or medium delivery truck is preferred.
- Paid or unpaid experience in food service work is preferred.
- One year experience operating a motor vehicle in a commercial environment is preferred.
Education Level
- Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent is preferred.
Salary/Compensations
- $3,047.58 - $4,149.83 Monthly
