About the Role

The Globe and Mail is seeking a full-time data editor to focus on personal finance journalism. This role will collaborate with reporters and editors to develop consumer-focused data projects, empowering readers with informed decision-making. The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team producing high-impact journalism using data, code, and multimedia across all platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Gather, process, analyze, and visualize data to support daily and enterprise personal finance and business journalism.
  • Collaborate with reporters, editors, and visual journalists on data-driven stories, emphasizing consumer-focused projects.
  • Spot check data work performed by other team members and journalists.
  • Build and maintain tools to assist reporters and editors with data reporting.
  • Serve as an ambassador for data literacy in journalism throughout the newsroom.

Requirements

  • Strong news judgment with an understanding of how data best serves the story and the reader.
  • Experience with data-driven stories and projects in a newsroom, particularly with a business or consumer journalism focus.
  • Experience acquiring and maintaining datasets of varying sizes.
  • Experience with data analysis tools like Excel or Google Sheets.
  • Experience with coding languages like Python or R.
  • Experience visualizing data with a demonstrated understanding of best practices for graphic presentation of information in journalism.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with varying deadlines and sizes.
