About the Role
The Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, functional, and well-maintained environment within our main Family Resource Center and Satellite Sites. This position performs a combination of custodial services, routine building maintenance, preventative maintenance, basic handyman work, and general facilities support.
Responsibilities
- Perform routine cleaning and sanitation of classrooms, offices, meeting rooms, kitchens, restrooms, hallways, entrances, common areas, and other assigned spaces across locations, using established safety procedures and environmentally responsible practices.
- Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, and clean walls, windows, vents, ceiling fans, light fixtures, baseboards, windowsills, high-touch surfaces, and other hard-to-reach areas to maintain clean, sanitary, orderly, and welcoming facilities.
- Respond promptly to spills, accidents, cleanliness concerns, and other conditions that may create health or safety hazards.
- Collect, sort, remove, and properly dispose of trash, recycling, compost, and other facility waste in accordance with organizational procedures, including setting out bins for scheduled pickup.
- Stock, replenish, organize, and safely store custodial supplies, equipment, and tools; monitor inventory levels and identify replenishment needs for restroom and cleaning supplies, trash bags, and other consumables.
- Assist with room setup and breakdown for meetings, programs, special events, and deliveries, including moving, loading, and unloading materials as needed.
- Monitor building conditions, report maintenance and repair needs, and perform minor repairs and preventive maintenance within the scope of the position.
- Complete assigned duties within established timeframes while adhering to organizational quality standards, policies and procedures, safety protocols, applicable regulatory requirements, and proper chemical and equipment-handling practices.
- Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
- Perform basic, non-licensed building maintenance and repair tasks within the employee's training, skill level, and authorized scope of work.
- Replace light bulbs, filters, batteries, hardware, signage, and other routine facility components; perform minor patching, caulking, touch-up painting, and similar repairs.
- Perform basic repairs and adjustments to doors, hinges, handles, locks, cabinets, shelves, furniture, fixtures, walls, and other building components.
- Assemble, install, move, and maintain furniture, shelving, fixtures, equipment, and other facility items; perform basic plumbing and other routine maintenance tasks when appropriately trained and authorized.
- Escalate electrical, gas, major plumbing, structural, roofing, HVAC, fire/life-safety, hazardous-materials, and other specialized repairs to the Facilities and Safety Coordinator.
- Work closely with the Facilities and Safety Coordinator to prioritize and address day-to-day custodial, maintenance, and facility needs.
- Maintain work areas in a clean, orderly, and safe condition; promptly identify and report hazards, unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, security concerns, and other risks.
- Follow the organization's Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP), Workplace Violence Prevention Plan, emergency procedures, safety policies, and applicable Cal/OSHA requirements.
- Safely operate, maintain, and store ladders, hand and power tools, machinery, electrical equipment, cleaning chemicals, and other equipment, using required personal protective equipment (PPE) and following applicable safety procedures.
- Support facility safety inspections, emergency preparedness, corrective actions, unobstructed exits, accessible pathways, and other safety activities as directed by the Facilities and Safety Coordinator.
- Maintain regular communication with the Facilities and Safety Coordinator regarding facility conditions, priorities, work orders, and emerging needs.
- Participate in required safety, compliance, emergency preparedness, and job-specific training.
- Maintain confidentiality and respect the privacy of families, staff, visitors, and community members.
- Follow organizational policies, procedures, and safety requirements and use sound judgment when performing assigned duties.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Must complete a full background check (Department of Justice, FBI, Child Abuse Index) after conditional offer is made.
- Must have TB clearance
- Requires a valid California Driver’s License and clean driving record
Skills
- Ability to travel between assigned work locations as an essential function of the role; work is split between main center, and satellite sites approximately 3-4 miles apart.
- Ability to maintain a regular late afternoon and evening schedule, with flexibility to adjust hours during agency closures, holidays, school breaks, special events, or other operational needs.
- Physical ability to perform cleaning tasks, including lifting, bending, standing for extended periods, and other physical requirements as outlined in the Physical Demands section below this job description.
- Demonstrated ability to perform routine cleaning, custodial, and basic maintenance tasks safely and effectively.
- Basic knowledge of common building maintenance practices, tools, equipment, and materials.
- Ability to safely use common hand tools, power tools, cleaning equipment, ladders, carts, and other equipment appropriate to the position.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, safety procedures, product labels, and manufacturer's instructions.
- Ability to identify routine facility problems and determine when an issue requires escalation to the Facilities and Safety Coordinator or a qualified contractor.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to cleanliness, safety, and quality.
- Ability to work independently and prioritize multiple tasks.
- Stand and walk for extended periods during the workday.
- Frequently bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, push, pull, and perform repetitive physical movements associated with cleaning and maintenance activities.
- Safely lift, carry, push, and pull materials, supplies, tools, cleaning equipment, furniture, and other items.
- Regularly lift and carry objects weighing up to approximately 50 pounds, with heavier items moved using carts, dollies, team lifting, or other appropriate mechanical assistance.
- Occasionally move or assist with moving heavier objects using appropriate equipment or assistance.
- Reach overhead and work above shoulder level when performing routine maintenance, cleaning, stocking, or related tasks.
- Climb and work from approved ladders or step stools when properly trained and when the task can be safely performed from the equipment provided.
- Maintain balance and safely navigate stairs, uneven surfaces, storage areas, and other facility environments.
- Perform tasks requiring hand strength, manual dexterity, grip, and coordination.
- Operate common custodial and maintenance equipment, hand tools, and power tools appropriate to the position and employee's training.
- Visually inspect facilities, equipment, surfaces, labels, signs, and safety conditions.
- Work in environments that may include exposure to dust, cleaning products, odors, noise, outdoor conditions, temperature variations, and other conditions normally associated with custodial and facilities work, using appropriate controls and PPE.
- Respond appropriately to routine facility emergencies and urgent maintenance or safety conditions.

Experience Level
- Minimum of 2 years of custodial or janitorial experience, preferably in educational or child-centered environments.
- Previous experience in custodial, janitorial, building maintenance, facilities, property maintenance, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
