About the Role

The Phlebotomist collects specimens to aid in disease detection, diagnosis, and monitoring. This role provides phlebotomy support within the hospital, requiring excellent customer service, sound judgment, and proficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Collect specimens for clinical laboratory analysis in a safe and effective manner.
  • Read and interpret documents such as prescriptions for blood work, requisitions, safety rules, and procedure manuals.
  • Complete all technical and clinical procedures for which the phlebotomist has been trained.
  • Provide care and services appropriate to the age and special characteristics of the patients served.
  • Meet patient/family needs related to major fears and stressors when providing direct delivery of care or services.
  • Provide age-specific information about pain relief to patients, family, and/or significant others.
  • Communicate effectively with nursing staff, physicians, and other hospital departments.
  • Assist with the delivery of specimens to the clinical laboratories in a safe and timely manner.
  • Conduct telephone and personal inquiries to laboratory customers with courtesy, respect, and confidentiality.
  • Assess and communicate patients' pain management needs to the interdisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrate cooperation and flexibility in meeting patient care needs, incorporating aspects of the change process.
  • Maintain competency and assume responsibility for continuing education relevant to responsibilities.
  • Improve job performance through continuing education and productive feedback.
  • Utilize computer systems to enter collection times, codes, and comments according to standard laboratory practices.
  • Perform job duties in an honest, punctual, and ethical manner.
  • Respond positively to changes in scheduling in conjunction with departmental needs.
  • Adapt to new standards and policies.
  • Follow accepted departmental guidelines such as wearing appropriate attire, maintaining personal hygiene, limiting personal phone calls, attending departmental in-services, completing mandatory in-services, and following break and mealtime limits.
  • Exercise good judgment by making appropriate decisions.
  • Accept constructive criticism professionally and carry out directives to completion.
  • Contribute to teamwork and the completion of the department's workload.
  • Maintain quality of performance during sample collection adhering to standards of practice.
  • Seek guidance in areas of question.
  • Maintain an environment conducive to meeting safety needs.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/G.E.D. required.
  • Some phlebotomy experience required.
  • BCLS - Basic Life Support Upon Hire required.
  • Use effective written and verbal communication skills to cooperatively work with customers and employees.
  • Listen well, take directions and engage in interactive dialogue with others.
  • Comprehend, remember and carry out instructions.
  • Seek the input of others to achieve consensus.
  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide into all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Accomplish a wide variety of tasks in a specified time, prioritize and make decisions as well as effectively provide feedback.

Experience Level

  • Minimum six months of direct patient care experience or successfully completed practical nurse program or enrolled in a healthcare program - preferred
  • For outpatient services, pediatric experience, the ability to transcribe orders, and experience in the processing for transport of specimens to the laboratory - preferred

Education Level

  • High School Diploma/G.E.D.
  • Formal Phlebotomy training or equivalent direct patient care training - preferred
  • Phlebotomy certification - preferred
  • Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Salary/Compensations

  • $43,599.00 - $56,679.00
