About the Role
The Financial Times is seeking a Senior Product Manager, Privacy for a fixed-term role covering maternity leave until the end of December 2027. This role is crucial for enhancing customer trust by ensuring transparency and responsible data usage in product experiences. The position involves leading the product strategy and roadmap for privacy, collaborating across various departments to create simple, trustworthy product experiences, and embedding privacy by design into product development.
Responsibilities
- Lead the evolution of the FT's privacy and consent experience.
- Identify opportunities to strengthen customer trust through transparent privacy experiences.
- Make it easier for customers to understand and manage how their data is used.
- Create simpler and more consistent privacy experiences across customer journeys.
- Help ensure product teams use customer data responsibly and in alignment with customer expectations.
- Work with teams across the FT to embed privacy thinking earlier in product and technology development.
- Develop a better understanding of customer interaction with privacy choices and their impact on trust and engagement.
- Use customer research and experimentation to improve communication and experience of privacy choices.
- Translate evolving regulatory requirements into scalable and customer-friendly product solutions.
- Improve systems, processes, and ownership models that support privacy experiences.
- Set the product direction by defining and communicating a clear product vision, strategy, and roadmap.
- Identify key customer and business problems and translate them into measurable outcomes.
- Balance customer trust, regulatory responsibilities, product experience, technical sustainability, and business needs when setting priorities.
- Build capabilities that support the FT long-term.
- Make the customer perspective central to privacy product decisions.
- Understand customer perceptions of privacy, data use, and consent.
- Identify areas where experiences may be confusing, inconsistent, or difficult.
- Advocate for simple language, meaningful choices, and experiences that empower customers.
- Lead initiatives involving multiple product and technology teams and business stakeholders.
- Collaborate with Engineering and Architecture on technical opportunities, constraints, and dependencies.
- Partner with Legal, Compliance, and Data Governance to translate requirements into solutions.
- Build strong relationships and create alignment across teams with competing needs.
- Define measures of success and use data and research to understand product performance.
- Develop hypotheses and experiments to improve customer understanding and trust.
- Use external trends and best practices to inform product direction.
- Ensure decisions are evidence-based while recognizing the importance of judgment.
- Take opportunities from problem definition through delivery, measurement, and iteration.
- Provide cross-functional teams with clear objectives and priorities.
- Identify risks, dependencies, and trade-offs early.
- Communicate strategy, progress, outcomes, and decisions clearly to stakeholders.
- Provide senior product leadership by bringing clarity to complex problems.
- Influence teams and stakeholders without formal authority.
- Contribute to the Product community and raise the quality of product thinking.
- Support and mentor other Product Managers.
Requirements
- Comfortable working in complex, technically challenging, and highly cross-functional environments.
- Significant experience managing digital products or platforms.
- Strong track record of defining product strategy and translating it into measurable outcomes.
- Experience leading complex initiatives across multiple teams and stakeholder groups.
- Strong customer focus and ability to identify underlying customer problems.
- Excellent judgment in balancing customer, business, technical, and regulatory considerations.
- Strong analytical skills and experience using data, customer research, and experimentation to inform decisions.
- Ability to turn complex or ambiguous problems into clear priorities and actions.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience communicating with senior stakeholders.
- Experience working closely with engineers, designers, researchers, analysts, and other specialist disciplines.
- Understanding of how product decisions contribute to customer value and sustainable business outcomes.
- Collaborative leadership style and ability to influence without direct authority.
- Ability to learn a complex domain quickly and work effectively with specialist colleagues.
