About the Role

The UK Data Protection Officer will effectively manage the UK Data Protection team and collaborate with regional DPOs to enable the UK Compliance function to manage data protection risk and regulatory compliance across the UK entities’ global licensed footprint. This includes ensuring controls are fit for purpose, contributing to a global DP framework, and supporting cross-border data protection activities.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure UK entities’ legal and regulatory obligations for data privacy and protection are mapped to comprehensive activities, processes, and controls.
  • Embed the global Horizon Scanning framework within the UK DP team's BAU and contribute to formal UK Compliance reporting.
  • Manage the UK DP team, monitoring delivery effectiveness against key activities and SLAs for regulatory compliance.
  • Observe workloads and resource needs, proactively identifying and escalating issues.
  • Identify development opportunities for direct reports and provide pastoral support.
  • Engage with internal stakeholders in Infosec, IT, and Claims to support DSARs, e-discovery, and subpoenaed information.
  • Oversee externally outsourced DP provision for UK entities, collaborating with regional DPOs where resources are shared.
  • Provide advice and guidance on technical DP matters and DP contract clauses for contracts governed by English law.
  • Ensure contracts and service agreements meet information security, data security, privacy, and breach notification requirements.
  • Retain external advisors when needed for specialized expertise and keep the UK Head of Compliance informed of expenses.
  • Ensure UK DP-owned actions from audits, assurance, and testing activities are completed on time.
  • Maintain a Privacy Incident Reporting and Response process for UK incidents or those impacting UK data.
  • Proactively escalate data breaches to the Boards of relevant UK entities and inform the CRO and Head of Compliance.
  • Lead required notifications to the ICO and participate in incident response and lessons learned.
  • Collaborate with Heads of Compliance, regional DPOs, and internal stakeholders to create a global DP strategy and operating model.
  • Perform information privacy risk analysis on cross-border and UK initiatives in collaboration with regional DPOs.
  • Assist the IT department in developing system-related security plans.
  • Undertake consent audits to validate consent is obtained and retained as required under UK laws.
  • Conduct records retention audits to ensure data is retained as required.
  • Attend and contribute to formal committees, working groups, and steering committees.
  • Oversee the production of insightful reporting on matters pertaining to UK entities and their global footprint.

Requirements

  • Proven experience in Privacy and Data Protection.
  • Previous DPO experience.
  • Degree level educated.
  • Knowledge of information systems is desirable.
  • Experience in financial services is highly desirable, but not required.
  • Experience in the insurance industry is desirable but not required.
  • Multi-country experience (i.e., beyond UK, and ideally including APac) is highly desirable, but not required.
  • Experience with model contractual clauses for international data transfers is highly desirable, but not required.
  • An unblemished career history holding positions requiring trustworthiness and personal integrity.
