About the Role

The Assistant Curator will support the Curator - Civic Collection in managing the City of Sydney’s Civic Collection, ensuring its preservation, cataloguing, interpretation, acquisition, and presentation. Responsibilities include supporting collection displays, conducting research, maintaining curatorial information systems, and coordinating the Curatorial Advisory Panel for a unique and highly valued collection.

Responsibilities

  • Supporting the management of the City of Sydney’s Civic Collection
  • Ensuring the preservation, cataloguing, interpretation, acquisition and presentation of the collection
  • Supporting the display of the collection
  • Conducting research
  • Maintaining and updating the curatorial information systems
  • Supporting the coordination of the Curatorial Advisory Panel

Requirements

  • Passionate about the material history of the City and the stewardship of its Civic Collection
  • Relevant qualifications or equivalent experience in art history, museum studies, curatorship, cultural heritage management, or a related field
  • Experience working with visual and decorative arts, as well as objects of historical and heritage significance
  • Confident using collection management databases and applying contemporary collection management practices
  • Enjoys conducting research and contributing to exhibitions, publications, public programs and collection interpretation
  • Strong project management, administrative and organisational skills, with the ability to balance competing priorities
  • Proactive, detail-oriented and committed to the preservation, care and presentation of cultural collections
  • Values engaging with the community through meaningful access to and interpretation of collections
  • Must complete a pre-employment health declaration and a criminal history check

Salary/Compensations

  • $117,487 - $131,845 per annum plus superannuation
