About the Role
The Fleet Service Center Supervisor oversees the service center workflow, including work assignments, direct supervision of employees, guidance and leadership to staff, and collaboration with customer departments and external vendors. This position is designated as an Essential Employee, crucial for maintaining public health, safety, and essential operations during city-designated emergencies.
Responsibilities
- Supervises the work activities and assignments of technicians performing maintenance and repairs on city vehicles and equipment.
- Prioritizes maintenance and repair needs, monitors work progress, approves parts orders, and evaluates the quality of completed work.
- Assists with vehicle diagnostics and ensures correct repair diagnoses.
- Interacts with customers regarding vehicle status, responds to complaints, and handles service calls.
- Interprets and enforces City and Fleet policies and procedures.
- Opens, researches, reviews, and closes work orders, including parts and labor charges.
- Monitors vehicle down reports and complies with Fleet operational policies.
- Manages the Labor Reconciliation Report and other Fleet Services requirements.
- Assists with budget development and inventory counts as required.
- Performs full range of supervisory activities including selection, training, evaluation, counseling, and recommendation for dismissal.
Requirements
- Five (5) years of direct work experience in the maintenance and repair of complex mechanical equipment.
- Two (2) years in a supervisory or lead capacity.
- Combination of equivalent experience and education may substitute for minimum qualifications.
- Must obtain an appropriate Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within ninety (90) days of employment if required.
- Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience to perform essential functions.
- Knowledge of fleet operations, including quality control, job standards, work order processing, pricing, labor hours, and equipment/materials.
- Knowledge of Federal, State, and Local laws.
- Knowledge of city practice, policy, and procedures.
- Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
- Knowledge of supervisory and managerial techniques and principles.
- Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
- Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other City employees and the public.
- Individuals need to have good eye-and-hand coordination and read and write in dimly lit conditions.
- External New Hires must meet the City of Austin’s Driver Record Evaluation (DRE) requisite; cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.
